Livre Bruce Davidson: Los Angeles 1964 Bruce Davidson began taking photographs at the age of ten in Oak Park, Illinois. While attending Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University, he continued to further his knowledge and develop his passion. He was later drafted into the army and stationed near Paris. There he met Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the founders of the renowned cooperative photography agency, Magnum Photos.
When he left military service in 1957, Davidson worked as a freelance photographer for LIFE magazine and in 1958 became a full member of Magnum. From 1958 to 1961 he created such seminal bodies of work as “The Dwarf,” Brooklyn Gang,” and “Freedom Rides.” He received a Guggenheim fellowship in 1962 and created a profound documentation of the civil rights movement in America.

In 1986, Aperture first published Bruce Davidson's Subway-a ground-breaking series that has garnered critical acclaim both as a document of a unique moment in the cultural fabric of New York City as well as for its phenomenal use of extremes of color and shadow set against flash-lit skin. In Davidson's own words, "the people in the subway, their flesh juxtaposed against the graffiti, the penetrating effect of the strobe light itself, and even the hollow darkness of the tunnels, inspired an aesthetic that goes unnoticed by passengers who are trapped underground, hiding behind masks, and closed off from each other."
In this third edition of a classic of photographic literature, a sequence of 118 images (including twenty-five never-before-published) move the viewer through a landscape at times mena...Livre La sélection de Marc Pussemier, de la Librairie Photographique - Octobre 2011

Davidson's poetic and profound eye reveals not only the circus that is passing away, but takes us through what could be called the eternal circus. At a three-ring show in 1958 Davidson climbed to the top of the tent to view the performances of famous lion-tamer Clyde Beatty and human-cannonball Hugo Zacchini. His deeper interest was in the daily lives of circus people – the roustabouts, riggers, a pretty girl who rode an elephant
in the “spec”, and an intimate series of a dwarf clown. Most of these pictures are published here for the first time. In 1965 at a huge multi-ring coliseum show, Davidson took a more critical look at performances under a steel and concrete environme...Livre Bruce Davidson: England/scotland 1960 In 1960, after spending an intense year photographing a notorious Brooklyn street gang called The Jokers, Bruce Davidson decided that he needed to get away from the tension, depression, and potential violence connected to that work. He took on a commission to photograph Marilyn Monroe during the making of John Houston's film The Misfits in the Nevada desert, and then traveled to London on a commission for The Queen magazine. Edited by Jocelyn Stevens, The Queen was a magazine devoted to British lifestyle and Davidson was charged, with no specific agenda, to spend a couple of months touring England and Scotland to build a photographic portrait of the two countries. England/Scotland 1960 offers a visionary insight into the very heart of English and Scottish cultures. Reflecting a postwar era in which the revolutions of the...Signature Bruce Davidson Book Signing

«Un festival entre traditions et découvertes
Berceau de l’Antiquité, trait d’union entre les civilisations d’Europe, d’Afrique et d’Asie, la Méditerranée est le lieu de tous les contrastes et de toutes les passions. Mille fois décrites et chantées, ses rives ensoleillées ont de tout temps attiré écrivains, peintres et poètes. ...Exposition Bruce Davidson: Gifts to the Collection Bruce Davidson (American, b. 1933) is one of the most influential photographers of the last half century. Working in both color and black and white, Davidson has documented subjects ranging from the civil rights movement to the urban grit of Harlem and the New York subway system. This exhibition presents a selection of 42 photographs and celebrates important gifts of vintage prints that will be exhibited for the first time since their acquisition in 2013.
Davidson is known for his humanist outlook and a desire to engage directly with his subject matter, approaches that owe much to his early artistic influences in photography, including Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Davidson’s projects include The Dwarf (1958), Brooklyn Gang (1959), and Time of Change (1961–1965), the latter of w...Exposition Exhibition : « American Moments: Photographs from The Phillips Collection » A celebration of recent major gifts to the museum, American Moments: Photographs from The Phillips Collection will feature over 130 photographs by more than 30 of the 20th century’s greatest photographers, including Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Esther Bubley, Bruce Davidson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Walker Evans and Paul Strand.
The exhibition will present a selection of mid-20th-century images of American subjects that evoke a sense of time, place, and experience. It will include Modernist work and street photography, documentary expression, and photojournalism, showcasing the strength and variety of The Phillips Collection’s fast-growing photography collection.
"These new additions by seminal American artists greatly enhance the Phillips’s photography collection," says exhibition...Exposition Exposition : Subway Through the use of historical and contemporary photographs, we celebrate the ingenuity and culture of subways. Since the late 19th Century, cities have turned to tunnelling to transport their ever growing mass. Efficient, claustrophobic, worn down and constantly updated, for many city dwellers subways are a necessary part of their daily lives. Transporting oneself underground seems both otherworldly and commonplace; it is a place where solitude is often felt strongly.

This traveling exhibition pairs for the first time 128 works by American photographers Paul Caponigro (b. 1932) and Bruce Davidson (b. 1933), enlightened observers of Britain and Ireland in the 1960s and ’70s. For Caponigro, Ireland and Britain became sites of creative energy to which he returned repeatedly. Davidson brought the same gritty street sensibility that had made his Brooklyn Gang series a sensation among photograph collectors. The exhibition examines the artistic, social, and historical forces informing two master photographers as they bring American eyes to enduring landscapes and changing cultural scenes.

Until today Magnum stands for documentary photography of the highest standard. Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour (Chim) founded the legendary photo agency in 1947, with the aim to work independently in a motivated cooperative of likeminded photographers - as reporters, commentators and poets with a camera. The decisive moment and Human Interest became the central paradigms of this group.
The exhibition IN OUR TIME opens a time window to the first forty years of Magnum with photographs of the five initiators and fifty other members, such as Werner Bischof, Ernst Haas, Erich Lessing, Eve Arnold, Marc Riboud, Elliott Erwitt, Inge Morath, René Burri, Bruce Davidson, Constantine Manos, Burk Uzzle, Hiroji Kubota, Bruno Barbey, Josef Koudelka, Gilles Peress, Mary Ellen Mark, Susa...Exposition Jackson Fine Art presents two exhibitions « Central Park » & « Paris » of Bruce Davidson and The Segregation Portfolio of Gordon Parks
Jackson Fine Art is proud to present Central Park & Paris, our second solo exhibition featuring exquisite black and white photographs by one of the most influential photographers of our time – Bruce Davidson.
In Bruce Davidson's Central Park & Paris, we discover “the park”, a common theme throughout art history, to be a democratic retreat from bustling city-life. Davidson writes, “Central Park is a man-made environment that can make us believe we are in the wilds of Minnesota or on the peaks of the Bridger Wilderness. As we stroll the Ramble, explore the Ravine, or jog along the Reservoir, the line between reality and illusion is blurred. The park has trees more than a century old.“ Equally rooted in history, Paris, known as “the City of Light” and “the C...Exposition Bruce Davidson - Circus

« C’était une après midi brumeuse, quand j’ai vu le nain pour la première fois. Il était seul, devant le chapiteau en train de fumer une cigarette. Son corps difforme, sa tête de taille normale et ses petites jambes m’attiraient et en même temps elles me repoussaient. Il portait un petit costume à queue de pie, désuet et un chapeau-melon noir, tenant dans sa main un bouquet de fleurs en papier. Il était là, debout, dans l’int...Exposition Street Photography Selected Works from Six Decades
In the context of the 4th European Month of Photography Berlin, which is presented for the first time as a themed event, the Kunsthandel Jörg Maaß is pleased to announce the exhibition “Street Photography. Selected Works from Six Decades”.

American Street Photography of the 1940s to the 1970s is represented by works from Harry Callahan, Louis Fauer, Andreas Feininger, Robert Frank, Leon Levinstein, Ray K. Metzker, Erika Stone and Weegee. The exhibition closes with color prints of iconic examples of Street Photography, such as ...Exposition Early Magnum à Londres rare prints from the Magnum archive

Composed of work by photographers associated with the agency in its first 10 years (1947 – 1957), it includes all four founders: Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour, George Rodger and Robert Capa; series’ by Werner Bischof, Leonard Freed and Dennis Stock, as well as individua...Exposition New York Photographs - Sexy and the City Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce Sexy and the City, a summer group show on view from Thursday, July 9, through Friday, August 28, 2009.
Sexy and the City shows the alluring, romantic and sometimes scandalous side of New York's people and places. Capturing private, intimate moments and blatant displays of sexuality, these photographs span the decades from the 1940s to the present day, taken in landmark locations like the Brooklyn Bridge and in the quiet, out-of-the-way corners of the city.
From Alfred Eisenstaedt's iconic image of a kissing couple in Times Square on V-J Day, 1945, to Nan Goldin's drag queen on an anonymous New York street in the 1990s, from Garry Winogrand's topless woman surrounded by a crowd in Central Park to the homosexual couples photographed by Alvin Baltr...Exposition Sony World Photography Awards 2009 Expositions de Stuart Franklin, Cedric Delsaux, Bruce Davidson, Brent Stirton ainsi que la gagnante de l’Iris d’Or des World Photography Awards de Sony, Vanessa Winship, avec visites guidées par les photographes et séances de dédicaces.
