...Livre Alec Soth Songbook Known for his haunting portraits of solitary Americans in Sleeping by the Mississippi and Broken Manual, Alec Soth has recently turned his lens toward community life in the country. To aid in his search, Soth assumed the increasingly obsolescent role of community newspaper reporter. From 2012-2014, Soth traveled state by state while working on his self-published newspaper, The LBM Dispatch, as well as on assignment for the New York Times and others. From upstate New York to Silicon Valley, Soth attended hundreds of meetings, dances, festivals and communal gatherings in search of human interaction in an era of virtual social networks.
With Songbook, Soth has stripped these pictures of their news context in order to highlight the longing for connection at their root. Fragmentary, funny and sad, Songbook is a lyrical depic...Livre « Ping pong conversations » of Alec Soth at Contrasto
Ping Pong Conversations is a long, friendly conversation between Alec Soth, one of the most prominent artist of this time, and the Italian curator and critic Francesco Zanot. Analyzing his most famous photographs as well as others that have been published or are virtually unknown, Soth reflects upon his career as a photographer. Each picture gives rise to a charter of its own, an original thought or reflection. Storytelling and the use of color and black and white, staged and candid approaches, and personal and political issues are just a few of the many arguments that the American photographer discusses with Francesco Zanot, resulting in a combination of words and images that constitutes both a complex examination of Alec Soth's work and a manual on that reading of photography itself.

Le cinquième et dernier numéro, sur le thème Stigmate, est aujourd'hui tiré à 1000 exemplaires...Livre Alec Soth The Last Days of W. 'During these last days of the administration, what is the point of protest, satire or any other sort of rabble-rousing? In assembling this collection of pictures I’ve made over the last eight years, I’m not really trying to accomplish much at all. But as President Bush once said, 'One of the great things about books is, sometimes there are some fantastic pictures.''

It particularly addresses the work of artists emerging in Western and Eastern Europe--many of whom will be new to American audiences--and presents critical contexts for their work in accompanying essays. Gathering more than 120 image-makers from around the globe, this luscious compendium reads like an international art fair between covers, with the work of artists to watch now and in the future, from established figures to representatives of the newest generation. Among the artists featured here are Roy Arden, the Atlas Group, Seung Woo Back, Richard Billingham, Gerard Byrne, Claude Closky, Natalie Czech, Tacita Dean, Luc Delahaye, Ruud van Empel, J.H. Engstrom, Charles Freger,...Livre Suburban World - The Norling Photographs Men wearing suits jousting with sailfish. Head-on bridge collision. Men with linoleum. Kitchen murder-suicide. Firemen playing donkey baseball. Ideal woman in apron. Through more than 10,000 images, Irwin Denison Norling, the unofficial town photographer for Bloomington, Minnesota, captured the strange juxtapositions, incongruities, and dark corners of the developing suburban America of the 1950s and '60s. A competitive amateur glued to his police radio, Norling spent years examining the light and darkness, tragedies and desolation, rituals of community and celebration through the lens of the camera, deftly capturing the uneasy dichotomy between the familiar and subversive–the familiarly subversive. "That was the way it was. And the way it was, that's what I was after."
In 2002 veteran journalist Brad Ze...Livre Alec Soth - Niagara By way of follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut monograph Sleeping by the Mississippi, Alec Soth turns his eye to another iconic body of water, Niagara Falls. And as with his photographs of the Mississippi, these images are less about natural wonder than human desire. "I went to Niagara for the same reason as the honeymooners and suicide jumpers," says Soth, "the relentless thunder of the Falls just calls for big passion." The subject may be hot, but the pictures are quiet, the rigorously composed and richly detailed products of a large-format 8x10 camera. Working over the course of two years on both the American and Canadian sides of the Falls, Soth edited the results of his labors down to a tight and surprising album. He depicts newlyweds and naked lovers, motel parking lots, pawnshop wedding ...Livre Fashion Magazine by Alec Soth In this beautifully produced third issue of the international art/fashion collectible Fashion Magazine, the acclaimed American photographer Alec Soth plays Editor-in-Chief, Advertising Director and sole photographic contributor--to quietly mesmerizing results. Featuring exquisite printing, unexpected gatefolds, special inks, varnishes and paper changes, this magazine-as-artist's-book-as-sociological-study-as-tongue-in-cheek-(yet-also-very-real)-advertising-vehicle contains some of the most riveting work being produced by a young photographer today. Soth explains: "While Fashion Magazine has a single photographer-author, it's still a magazine, not a book. So it doesn't follow my usual mode of slow, solitary production. It's collaboration. The ideas for the collaboration were formulated very quickly. I was approached ...Livre Alec Soth - Dog Days Bogota After completing the work for his first book, Sleeping by the Mississippi, in 2002, Alec Soth traveled with his wife to Bogota, Colombia, to adopt a baby girl. The baby's birth mother had given the new parents a book filled with letters, pictures and poems for their daughter. "I hope that the hardness of the world will not hurt your sensitivity," she wrote. "When I think about you I hope that your life is full of beautiful things." While the courts processed the adoption paperwork, and with these words as a mission statement, Soth set about making his own book for his daughter. Soth writes, "In photographing the city of her birth, I hope I've described some of the beauty in this hard place." This beauty makes itself apparent through ramshackle architecture, the companionship of animals and t...Conférence Visite commentée de l'exposition "L'espace entre nous" par Alec Soth le 15 avril 2008 19h00 - 20h00

Angela Grauerholz is a Canadian photographer creating imaginary spaces, glimpses of interiors (either public or private), and ethereal rural and urban landscapes. Grauerholz's subjective vision is contemplative, presenting intimate moments that reveal the passage of time. With their out-of-focus quality, her photographs appear as an autobiographical stream of consciousness, which is transformed by the eyes of the viewers to create a sense of collective memory. Over the course of her career, the artist's use of photography has revealed the world through black and white, and more recently coloured, self-reflective images. From the pictorial nature of her single photographs to composite installations, Grauerholz has contributed to the re-invention of the medium. She emphasizes the materiality of images, proposing...Exposition Exhibition : « Gathered Leaves » by Alec Soth 'To me the most beautiful thing is vulnerability' – Alec Soth
© Alec Soth
Alec Soth is widely considered to be world’s foremost documentary photographer. Recently described as the ‘greatest living photographer of America’s social and geographical landscape’, Soth is admired for his experimentation across exhibition, book, magazine and digital forms.
Like many great photographers and writers from the American canon – such as Robert Frank, Stephen Shore and Joel Sternfeld – Soth takes the open road as his subject, but brings to it his own unique and modern twist.
Through haunting, intimate portraits, desolate landscapes and wide open wildernesses, his work captures a profound sense of what it is to be human. Tenderness, joy, disappointment, fear or pr...Exposition Look3, Charlotteville Festival of the Photograph PEACE, LOVE & PHOTOGRAPHY SINCE 2006

Hillman", comprising 117 works judiciously acquired by William Hillman over the past three decades. With a sophisticated eye and tremendous dedication to photography, Hillman has built a comprehensive collection by pursuing consummate examples from top photographers spanning the history of the medium. In Hillman’s dedication to both photography and his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his primary mission over the past three decades has been to build a world-class collection that will ultimately be gifted to the Carnegie Museum of Art. “There are gaps in the vintage acquisitions and the need to support and strengthen the contemporary component of this endeavor,” Hillman ha...Exposition Exposition: SONGBOOK by ALEC SOTH Known for his haunting portraits of solitary Americans in Sleeping by the Mississippi and Broken Manual, Alec Soth has recently turned his lens toward community life in the United States. From upstate New York to Silicon Valley, Soth attended hundreds of meetings, dances, festivals and communal gatherings in search of authentic human interaction in an era of widespread virtual social networking. Evocative, fragmentary, funny and sad, the work is a lyrical depiction of the tension between American individualism and the desire to be united. Songbook presents a profound exploration of the shifting landscape of early 21st century American culture.

About Face will include works by twenty-nine artists from the United States, England, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Iran and South Africa. Though each of these photographers approaches portrait-making differently, certain thematic threads resonate throughout the show, including questions of racial, cultural, ethnic, class and gender identity; the relationship between individuals and typologies; the way photographic processes themselves inform meaning; the relevance of historical precedents to contemporary practice; and the impact of media stereotypes on self-presentation. Considered collectively, the works in About Fa...Exposition Giorgio Armani, partenaire officiel de Paris photo, présente l'exposition Acqua#2 au Grand Palais à Paris

The 40 works range from early black and white photographs to the classic icons of American color photography.
A number of great photographers played a large role in forming and defining the American Myth. The discovery of everyday aspects of American life was decisive in this: cities and symbols, cars, signs, billboards, advertising, telephone poles, parking lots and barbershops.
People are a second aspect of the wide-ranging exhibition, from the years of the Great Depression to impressive portraits of celebrities.
The comparison of almost a century of American photographs results in an interesting structure of similarities and contrasts, which are balanced through the selective choice of images.
The exhibition begins with works of the early 20th century by Paul Strand and Berenice Abbott, who both show ...Exposition Strange & Familiar: Three Views of Brighton New works by three internationally acclaimed photographers, each presenting a very different response to the city of Brighton & Hove. MoH was conceived in order to reveal the inspiration that a new generation of photographers have gained from the history of photography in the form of books.

Marks of Honour is an ongoing project that aims to create a striking library of contemporary photo books.

Robert Capa’s iconic ‘The Falling Soldier’ (1936), Cartier-Bresson’s seminal ‘Place de l ’Europe’ (1932) capturing a man jumping a large puddle, or Dennis Stock’s famous photograph of James Dean walking in the rain in Times Square (1955) are classic examples. These are images from the early years of Magnum, the height of photojournalism in the traditional sense, of black and white reportage and ‘the decisive moment’. With this in mind, it is interesting to consider what the future iconic Magnum images will be. ‘Magnum Contemporary’ at Atlas Gallery will feature striking photo...Exposition Selected photograhs - From Brassaï to Cindy Sherman
For a number of years we have been gathering together a collection of photographs which has evolved into a substantial group, but has never been shown publicly. A selection of which we would now like to present in our exhibition 'Selected photographs. From Brassaï to Cindy Sherman'.
Our intentions are to provide a wide and representative cross section of our inventory, beginning in the late 1920s and continuing up to the present day. We focus on American and European photography; black and white, as well as color. We have chosen works - in addition to the significance of the individual artists according to certain central themes: the nude, landscapes, portraits and architecture, to name the most prominent.
Brassaï and Cindy Sherman are representative of the chronology of our selection, the ...Exposition ALEC SOTH - The Space Between Us Alec Soth's photography is firmly rooted in the tradition of Walker Evans, Robert Frank, and Stephen Shore. His depiction of the everyday confronts the ideals romanticized by American society; independence, freedom, religious devotion and individual expression. Through his 8 x 10 camera lens, Soth captures the extraordinary by exposing and utilizing the vernacular of the ordinary. The exhibition features a selection from Alec Soth's two acclaimed bodies of work Sleeping by the Mississippi and Niagara along with a selection of images from the series Dog Days, Bogotá, and his ongoing project, Portraits.
Sleeping by the Mississippi: Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Alec Soth captures America's iconic yet often neglected "Third Coast". The exhibition uses photographs, books and texts to illustrate the history of MAGNUM year by year and gives visitors the opportunity to view work by 83 photographers, such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Carl de Keyzer, Martin Parr, Susan Meiselas and Leonard Freed.
MAGNUM was established in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour. Alec Soth came to prominence in 2004 with his documentary Sleeping by the Mississippi, a poetic and deeply enigmatic account of the river and its people. Here the distinctive landscape and individuals he encountered were captured through a series of pictures suggesting an imaginary, dream-like meandering journey of their very own. Soth is continually intrigued with the act of photography in relation to different states of consciousness making pictures that have compelling formal qualities yet are lyrical, open-ended and pensive studies of the dynamics between people and place.
Like previous work, Niagara is borne out of an immersive experience. It...Modifier l'image
