Alex Prager (Robert Berman Gallery, Santa Monica, CA) - A native of Los Angeles, Prager's photography career began in her teens. At 22, she took work shooting fashion editorials for high profile magazines such as Flaunt and V while simultaneously forging a path on the Los Angeles independent gallery circuit. Prager's unique flair for capturing the subtlety in her subjects began to earn her worldwide recognition. In keeping with her continued and growing importance on the downtown art scene, her pieces are alluring, odd, riveting and compelling. It is Prager's ability to juxtapose the horrific and grotesque next to an almost childlike glamour, that marks her relevance in the modern art world.

For ten years, Los Angeles artist Alex Prager has staged imaginary scenes for her camera—dream worlds in Technicolor, rife with tension and melodramatic fictions. Deftly blending archetypes from post-war America, her images have re-enacted and burlesqued media portrayals of women, drawing from classic Hollywood movies, fashion advertising, and icons of documentary photography. Face in the Crowd, Prager’s first solo museum show in the United States, presents her latest body of work by the same title.
As Prager’s most ambitious and complex series to date, Face in the Crowd features large-scale photographs of people assembled in congested public spaces such as an airport terminal, lobby, beach, and movie theater. Blurring the line between fiction and reality, Prager directed the actions of hundreds ...Exposition THE AIPAD PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW NEW YORK

Michael Hoppen is pleased to present Compulsion, an exhibition of new work by contemporary artist Alex Prager. The exhibition will feature 22 colour photographs from the series, as well as the artist’s new short film, La Petite Mort, with accompanying film stills. The exhibition will be shown simultaneously in London, Los Angles and New York.
MoMA curator Roxana Marcoci has described Prager’s work as “intentionally loaded,” saying “it reminds me of silent movies – there is something pregnant, about to happen, a mix of desire and angst.” Prager’s new work furthers her exploration of subversive narratives through the construction of “scenes” inspired by tragedies depicted in the media and paired with emotive close-ups of eyes. The eyes, whether interpreted...Exposition The Americana à la Galerie M+B chez Colette : LeRoy Grannis, Hugh Holland, Joseph Szabo...
Szabo, leur homologue de la côte Est, et son travail sur la Jonas Beach des 70s, i...Exposition New Photography 2010: Roe Ethridge, Elad Lassry, Alex Prager, Amanda Ross-Ho The 2010 edition of MoMA's annual photography series highlights the work of Roe Ethridge, Elad Lassry, Alex Prager, and Amanda Ross-Ho, four contemporary artists who engage photography as a medium with fluid borders between editorial work, film, and visual art. Their pictures—whether shot in the real world, manipulated in the studio, or culled from pop culture, advertising, and the movie industry—have shifted contexts at least once, often from the magazine page to the gallery wall. Infusing the seductive language of film and commercial photography with a touch of sly conceptualism, they explore the relationship between straight and constructed photographs and still and moving images. The exhibition features 36 works of photography and film; Lassry's Untitled (2009) and the U.S. debut of Prager's De...Exposition Alex Prager à la galerie Michael Hoppen Michael Hoppen Contemporary will present the most recent work by rising American photographer Alex Prager. Following the success of her 2008 critically acclaimed exhibit, The Big Valley, the exhibition will stage the continuation of Prager’s Los Angeles narrative, as she contrives the next generation of retro-modern damsels.
Women adorned with wigs and staged in neon Californian landscapes result in timeless, eerie and compelling images. Her large-format Technicolor photographs draw from the cinematic conventions of the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch. These visually engaging portraits go deeper than what meets the eye, creating an intriguing and surreal narrative for the women they feature, which hints at a sense of allure and uncertainty.
Initially inspired by the work of William Eggl...Exposition Week-End - Alex Prager M+B is pleased to present the exhibition Week-End, the latest body of work by 29-year old photographer ALEX PRAGER. Completely self-taught and recognized for her trademark vision that trumps any formal training, Prager’s Week-end is a collection of color photographs as dazzling as they are bizarre. Simultaneous with our Los Angeles exhibition, Week-end will be shown at the Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York City.
The culmination of a trilogy that began with Polyester and The Big Valley, Prager's Week-End began as organically as her other series. Inspired by the high drama of classic movies—which, despite their theatricality, touch upon genuine emotions of alienation, fear, anger, longing, and lust—Prager's images seem at first to be all exquisite surface. However the girls of this series&mda...Exposition COLOUR à la Michael Hoppen Gallery How do you describe colour?
Even the dictionary definition of it is poetic:
'That aspect of things that is caused by differing qualities of the light reflected or emitted by them, definable interms of the observer or of the light.'
And;
'a substance, such as a dye, pigment, or paint, that imparts a hue.'
And;
'a reddening of the face; a blush'.
The scientific words to objectify it are beautiful too: hyperchromatism, wavelength, luminance, iridescence and purity.
Since 1861 and the first permanent colour print by James Clerk Maxwell, photographers have been able to define their subjects in a more immediate and creative way using colour- stripping it out, intensifying or limiting it. The Michael Hoppen Contemporary Christmas show about a group of artists who utilize cyan, magenta, yellow and black i...Exposition Alex Prager The Big Valley Cinematic and darkly playful The Big Valley is a series of highly saturated staged portraits by Los Angeles based artist, Alex Prager. For her first solo UK exhibition this entirely new work will be shown alongside photographs from her high-successful Polyester series.
Prager photographs her female subjects in a style reminiscent of the great mid 20th Century film directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Douglas Sirk. Amongst the naivety of her compositions and colour palate there is the suggestion of impending narrative. Similar to old style movie stills displayed outside cinemas, Prager's photographs offer us stories that encourage us to imagine what happens before and after, beyond the edge of the frame. Often shot from an unexpected angle and unusually lit the audience are positioned as voyeurs. Synthetic wigs, fak...Modifier l'image
