David LaChapelle est un photographe de mode américain, né en 1963 dans le Wisconsin aux États-Unis, David LaChapelle est mondialement connu pour ses photographies de mode hautes en couleur et ses mises en scène baroques peuplées de célébrités. Mêlant avec virtuosité histoire de l’art et références populaires, street culture et questionnements métaphysiques, il dresse une allégorie saisissante de la culture du XXIème siècle. Devenu l’un des photographes les plus publiés, il se concentre depuis 2006 sur l’aspect artistique de sa pratique.

Un grand plongeon dans l'univers pailleté et provocant du photographe américain. C'est ce que nous propose Hilka Sinning avec un documentaire de 52 minutes réalisé en 2006. Entre New York et Los Angeles, entre ses photos de commande et le vernissage bondé de sa dernière expo de l'époque, c'est le tourbillon du glamour et de la vie qui traverse le film. On suit un Lachapelle exigeant, foisonnant, excessif, mais dont le travail ne laisse personne indifférent.

La Monnaie de Paris accueillera du 5 février au 31 mai 2009 la Rétrospective de David LaChapelle. Cette exposition du célébrissime photographe américain est la plus vaste et la plus complète jamais organisée à ce jour en France. Près de 200 oeuvres seront exposées dans les salons du 1er étage de l’hôtel de la Monnaie.
A travers cette grande rétrospective le public pourra découvrir la complexité du travail de ce grand artiste reconnu en 1996 comme le meilleur photographe de l’année par la revue française Photo ainsi que American Photo magazines.
