Every year since 1975, American photographer Nicholas Nixon (b. 1947) has taken a portrait of his wife Bebe and her three sisters. The requirements for this unusual, long-term artistic project are extremely simple: The four women reunite for a group portrait, with the only constants being the order in which they appear left to right and the size of the negative. The sisters are usually portrayed within a narrow frame, often shown standing and from the chest up – more rarely seated or in full view – and looking directly into the camera. Over a period of 40 years a singular series has developed, one that asserts the reality of the photograph just as much as it expresses the passage of time, a transience marked by the changing relationships among the sisters.

Best known for his black-and-white large-format photography, including his ongoing portrait series featuring his wife Bebe and her three sisters, Nicholas Nixon has turned his attention in recent years to color imagery. In Nicholas Nixon: Hospice Patients, the artist empathetically captures in intimate detail the precious last moments of terminally ill patients, often alongside their close friends and family. Nixon’s signature style of photographing at close range facilitates not only a physical connection for viewers, but also a visceral and emotional one, enabling us to connect with these individuals who would otherwise be strangers.

When a subject and a photographer come together and agree that a likeness will be made, a complex dynamic is set in motion. Vanity comes into play, as does the subject’s comfort or discomfort at being scrutinized by the camera. Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of black and white photographs by Nicholas Nixon from the series “Patients”. The exhibition will open on Thursday, January 17 and close on February 16, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, January 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This will be Nixon's second exhibition at Yossi Milo Gallery.
The photographs that comprise the series “Patients” document people who are seriously or terminally ill. Taken while visiting four different hospitals in Boston over the past three years, the project is a continuation of the artist’s interest in portraiture and in phases of the life cycle rarely shared with others beyond family and close companions.
