Major works by William Eggleston, Hiroshi Sugimoto and several alumni of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf outline some of the most thought-provoking conceptual changes that the field has undergone in the last forty years. »

William Eggleston will be represented with a number of outstanding works, including his iconic Greenwood, Mississippi, 1973, estimated at $220,000-280,000. Largely recognized as a masterful achievement in color photography, the iconic work depicting a lushly painted red ceiling has been widely celebrated for its nuanced calibration of color and form. The print offered in the sale was made in the late 1970s, before the numbered edition that Eggleston produced in 1980, which adds to its rarity. Other outstanding works by Eggleston in the sale include Sumner, Mississippi, circa 1970, estimated at $60,000-80,000; Morton, Mississippi, 1969-1970, estimated at $50,000-70,000; and Near Jackson, Mississippi, circa 1970, estimated at $40,000-60,000.

Another important Contemporary masterpiece in the sale is Hiroshi Sugimoto’s The Music Lesson, 1999, estimated at $200,000-250,000 from his famed Portraits series. Based on Johannes Vermeer’s mysterious genre painting Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman, 1662-1665, Sugimoto’s captivating work is making its auction debut as it brings back to life one of the most enigmatic works by the 17th-century Dutch master.
Other contemporary highlights include Nobuyoshi Araki’s evocative diptych From Close to Range, 1991, estimated at $80,000-120,000; Peter Beard’s Tsavo north on the Athi Tiva, circa 150 lbs.- 160 lbs. Side bull elephant, February, 1965, estimated at $80,000-120,000, Giraffes in Mirage on the Taru Desert, June, 1960, estimated at $50,000-70,000, Cheetah Cubs at Mweiga nr. Nyeri, Kenya for The End of the Game, 1968, estimated at $50,000-70,000, and Record-Class Leopard, 1968, estimated at $40,000-60,000; Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #303, 1994, estimated at $60,000-80,000 and Untitled #105, 1982, estimated at $40,000-60,000; and Christian Boltanski’s Untitled, 1989, estimated at $50,000-70,000. Other contemporary artists whose works will be represented include Adam Fuss, Richard Misrach, Sebastião Salgado, Ahmet Ertug, Vik Muniz, David Hockney and Barry Frydlender.

ESTIMATE $60,000-80,000
The famed Kunstakademie Düsseldorf will be well represented with works by some of its most famous graduates : Thomas Demand Abgang/ Exit, 2000, estimated at $120,000-180,000 and Büro/ Office, 1995, estimated at $100,000-150,000, both of which depict life-size paper mockups that had been meticulously constructed, photographed and subsequently destroyed by Demand; Andreas Gurksy’s Paris, Centre Pompidou, 1995, estimated at $120,000-180,000, presenting an expansive and deep overview of the Herzog & de Meuron 1995 exhibition at the French institute that was lauded for its streamlined and simplified format; and Candida Höfer’s Palazzo Pisani Moretta,Venezia I, 2003, estimated at $50,000-70,000, showing a compelling view of an illustrious interior.
Classic photographs will be featured throughout the sale. Highlights include two works by Constantin Brancusi : Endless Column in Steichen’s Garden at Voulangis, circa 1923, estimated at $80,000-120,000 and View of the Studio, The Sorceress, The Kiss and The Chief, 1925, estimated at $40,000-60,000, both of which present Brancusi’s sculptures as he wanted them seen and remembered. Other classic highlights include László Moholy-Nagy’s Dada-influenced fotoplastik work Mein Name ist Hase - ich weiss von nichts (My Name is Hare - I Know Nothing), 1927, estimated at $60,000-80,000; André Kertész’s celebration of the City of Light in Untitled (Notre Dame at Night), 1925, estimated at $50,000-70,000; Robert Frank’s humorous and ironic Chicago-Political Rally, 1956, estimated at $50,000-70,000; Diane Arbus’s desirable lifetime print Stripper, Miss Sata Lyte, in her dressing room with glasses Atlantic City, N.J., 1962, estimated at $35,000-55,000; Dorothea Lange’s poignant Migratory Cotton Worker, Eloy, Arizona, 1940, estimated at $30,000-50,000; and Heinrich Kühn’s graceful Miss Mary bei der Morgentoilette (Richard Wagnerstrasse Innsbruck), 1907, estimated at $30,000-50,000. Other classic photographers whose work will be offered in the sale include Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Man Ray, Eugene Atget, Louis Faurer, Hans Bellmer and Bill Brandt.

Fashion photography will be strongly represented with multiple works by Irving Penn, including a rich dye-transfer print of Summer Sleep, New York, 1949, estimated at $70,000-90,000, the timelessly charming Vogue Fashion Photograph (Café in Lima), Peru (Jean Patchett), 1948, estimated at $70,000-90,000, and the Surrealist Gaultier Eye Earrings, New York, January 26, 1998, estimated at $30,000-50,000; Helmut Newton’s seductive Hinterhof Akt, Paris, 1974, estimated at $70,000-90,000 and his tantalizing Gold Watch, Beverly Hills, 1996, estimated at $60,000-80,000; Richard Avedon’s iconic Nastassja Kinski and the Serpent, Los Angeles, California, June 14, 1981, estimated at $60,000-80,000; and Nick Knight’s provocative Kate, 2006, estimated at $40,000-60,000. Additional fashion photographs will be represented with works by Marilyn Minter, Ormond Gigli, Horst P. Horst and George Hoyningen-Huene.
