JH Engström was born in Karlstad, Värmland in Sweden 1969. Moves to Paris with his parents at the age of 10. Moves back to Värmland, Sweden two years later.
1991 he moves back to Paris on his own and works as an assistent to fashion
photographer Mario Testino. 1993 he starts working as assistent to documentary photographer Anders Petersen in Stockholm.
1997 he graduates from the Photography and Film department at Gothenburg
University. 1997 he also publish his first book; ”Shelter” (Bokförlaget DN)
1998 he moves to Brooklyn, New York and starts working on the ”Trying to
Dance”-project.
The year 2000 he travels throughout Europe and then moves to his native
region, Värmland, where he continues working on the”Trying to
Dance”-project. The book ”Trying to Dance” is published 2004 (Journal)
2004 he exhibits at Galerie VU’ and also starts working on a one-hour
documentary about his friend and collegue photographer Anders Petersen for
The Swedish Television. He exhibits throughout Europe.
2005 Engström have a one-man show at the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg.
He is also one of four shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Price.
He starts filming his second documentary for the Swedish Television, a 30
minutes film. His third book ”Haunts” is published by Steidl the fall 2006. The
”Haunts”- project is exhibited at Galerie VU’ the fall 2006.
He has recieved numerous grants and awards since 1994. He also holds
workshops regulary.
