Lise Sarfati, née en Algérie en 1958, commence à prendre des photos à l'âge de 15 ans. Après avoir terminé des études de Russe, elle se consacre entièrement à la Photographie. Couronnée de plusieurs prix importants, comme le fameux « Prix Nièpce » du Centre National de la Photographie, la photographe a exposé entre autres à la « Maison Européenne de la Photographie » (Acta Est, 2002) et à « The Photographers' Gallery London » (2005) ou, comme actuellement, au Centre Pompidou à Paris.
Sa participation aux Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d' Arles, est prévue pour l'année 2006.

French, born 1958. Lives in Paris. Lise Sarfati went to Russia for the first time at the age of fifteen. She spent her holidays, on the coast of the Black Sea. At the time, she was living and working in Nice which she saw as a big baroque theater inhabited by a flock of old people in a state of decay and people on the fringes of society. She obtained a master's degree in Russian studies at the Sorbonne. Her thesis was on photography from the 1920s. In 1986 she was assigned as the official photographer for the Acadamie des Beaux Arts in Paris. She left for Russia in 1989 with prestigious grants from Le Ministere de la Culture de Paris and La Villa Medicis Hors Les Murs. Until 1998 she photographed almost exclusively throughout Russia producing the body of work which would later become her first monograph, Acta Est, published by Phaidon - named after the Latin phrase Acta Est Fabula (The play is over). In these pictures she creates reconstructions of the Russian environment through the intimate relationships she has with this culture. Her present project brought her to the United States in 2003. Working in Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, California and Oregon she photographed young people, women mainly, in the context of their solitary lives - their bedrooms, their gardens, alone in their parents living rooms, at the supermarket. Sarfati revisits the characters in different scenes through this project revealing a sense of loss. They feel a desire but it has no object. This project will be published in 2005. Après le succès des trois premiers Fashion Magazine de Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden et Alec Soth, Magnum Photos a convié Lise Sarfati à réaliser l’opus 2008.
Calqué sur un magazine de style, Fashion Magazine présente des séries de mode et des publicités détournées, le tout orchestré par Lise Sarfati.
Ses photos prises à Austin, au Texas, dressent un portrait dramatisé et complexe d’adolescentes, toutes issues de la « middle class » américaine, qui revisitent la mode selon leurs propres codes, avec désinvolture et distinction.

Dans son livre « The New Life / La Vie Nouvelle » Lise Sarfati s'intéresse aux vies solitaires des adolescents aux Etats-Unis. Dans chacun de ces portraits, elle dramatise la complexité de l'identité adolescente dans un territoire inhabituel – émotionellement et physiquement – où les plus simples des sentiments deviennent exaltés......
Réédité en « Petit Format », l'ouvrage Magnum Magnum était déjà paru en 2007. Ce livre retrace le travail des grands maîtres de la photographie du XXe siècle, des grands photographes actuels et des nouveaux talents de l'agence de photographes la plus connue du monde. 400 images iconiques des 60 dernières années ont été ici sélectionnées et commentées par les 69 photographes de Magnum. Ainsi, entre autres duos le travail d'Henri Cartier-Bresson est décrit par Eve Arnold, celui de Martin Franck par Ferdinando Scianna. L'oeuvre de Martin Parr est commenté par René Burri et l'oeuvre d'Alex Webb est détaillé par Chris Steele-Perkins.

Every issue of the Fashion Magazine is entirely produced by a single photographer, including fashion series and advertisements. In this new issue, Lise Sarfati returned to Austin, Texas, to photograph in their natural context the young women she had worked with on her earlier projects, in particular 'The New Life', in 2003. Premier ouvrage de la photographe française, Lise Sarfati (1958-), Acta Est dresse le bilan de ses nombreux voyages effectuésen Russie durant les années 1990. In each of these portraits, Lise Sarfati “dramatises” the complexity of adolescent identity; within unfamiliar territory - both emotionally and physically - where the simplest of feelings become exalted and everything is lived with an intensity that adults will never again be able to feel. We are talking here of a kind of parallel reality, an interstitial territory which doesn't understand geographical spaces or political systems, which no longer belongs either to a completely real reality or to a consciously conceived fiction, but rather finds itself fed by its own rituals and codes of behaviour, where the dividing line between good and bad, happiness and sadness, innocence and perversity or reality and fantasy is extensively blurred.

La Vie Nouvelle dresse un portrait de l’Amérique - le long cours d'un voyage aux Etats-Unis, où l'artiste réside dans les petites villes de Berkeley, Austin, Portland, Oakland, Berkeley, New Orleans et Los Angeles. Lise Sarfati nous parle de ses rencontres avec des personnes jeunes, devenues les personnages de cette histoire photographique. L'étrangeté des situations nous place d'emblée à distance.
Plongés dans une intime introspection, les personnages offrent, ici des portraits de visages aux regards absents - comme perdus dans un ailleurs- et là, des compositions aux corps alanguis - comme dans la paus...

Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce Rough, Cold and Close: A Russian Poem, an exhibition of color photographs by Lise Sarfati. The exhibition will open on Thursday, October 23 and close on Saturday, December 6, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, October 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
The exhibition features 16” x 21” photographs of interiors, buildings, landscapes and people, taken while the artist was living in Russia between 1991 and 2000. The photographs were made in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, as well as in the Vologda region in northern Russia.

Throughout that period MAGNUM never ceased to supply photographs that have become part of the world’s collective memory – pictures of landmark events like the Russian army’s invasion of Prague in 1968 and the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in Beijing in 1989.
