Every issue of the Fashion Magazine is entirely produced by a single photographer, including fashion series and advertisements. In this new issue, Lise Sarfati returned to Austin, Texas, to photograph in their natural context the young women she had worked with on her earlier projects, in particular 'The New Life', in 2003. The girls have changed, they are a little older, and some about to emerge from adolescence.
In 'Austin, Texas - Fashion Magazine', Lise Sarfati explores territories of childhood, adolescence and adult womanhood, and seeks to record possible becomings. Explorations of identity that are encouraged by the clothing, which is both incidental and essential: on the one hand, the clothes seem to have been chosen for each model, on the other, they are secondary to the staging of the pho...
In each of these portraits, Lise Sarfati “dramatises” the complexity of adolescent identity; within unfamiliar territory - both emotionally and physically - where the simplest of feelings become exalted and everything is lived with an intensity that adults will never again be able to feel. We are talking here of a kind of parallel reality, an interstitial territory which doesn't understand geographical spaces or political systems, which no longer belongs either to a completely real reality or to a consciously conceived fiction, but rather finds itself fed by its own rituals and codes of behaviour, where the dividing line between good and bad, happiness and sadness, innocence and perversity or reality and fantasy is extensively blurred.

This exhibition will explore the breadth and global diversity of contemporary photographic portraiture since 2000, highlighting recent acquisitions to the museum's permanent collection.
About Face will include works by twenty-nine artists from the United States, England, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Iran and South Africa. Though each of these photographers approaches portrait-making differently, certain thematic threads resonate throughout the show, including questions of racial, cultural, ethnic, class and gender identity; the relationship between individuals and typologies; the way photographic processes themselves inform meaning; the relevance of historical precedents to contemporary practice; and the impact of media stereotypes on self-presentation. Considered collectively, the works in About Fa...

On Hollywood focuses on the landscape of Los Angeles and women who were lured by their dreams of success in Hollywood, but who now struggle against harsher realities. Inspired by Guy Debord's concept of "psycho-geographical wanderings", or the study of how geographical surroundings can affect the emotional behavior of individuals, Sarfati roamed the boulevards of Hollywood l...

For over sixty years, Magnum photographers have been responsible for taking some of the world’s most memorable photographs, images that have become instantly recognizable. Robert Capa’s iconic ‘The Falling Soldier’ (1936), Cartier-Bresson’s seminal ‘Place de l ’Europe’ (1932) capturing a man jumping a large puddle, or Dennis Stock’s famous photograph of James Dean walking in the rain in Times Square (1955) are classic examples. These are images from the early years of Magnum, the height of photojournalism in the traditional sense, of black and white reportage and ‘the decisive moment’. With this in mind, it is interesting to consider what the future iconic Magnum images will be. ‘Magnum Contemporary’ at Atlas Gallery will feature striking photo...

[La Vie Nouvelle] features a series of [...] photographs by French photographer Lise Sarfati. The photographs were taken in cities like Austin (Texas), Asheville (North Carolina), Portland (Oregon), Berkeley, Oakland and Los Angeles (California), New Orleans (Louisiana) and some small towns in Georgia. In each of these portraits, Lise Sarfati dramatizes the complexity of adolescent identity; within unfamiliar territory - both emotionally and physically - where the simplest of feelings become exalted and everything is lived with an intensity that adults will never again be able to feel. Throughout that period MAGNUM never ceased to supply photographs that have become part of the world’s collective memory – pictures of landmark events like the Russian army’s invasion of Prague in 1968 and the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in Beijing in 1989. The exhibition uses photographs, books and texts to illustrate the history of MAGNUM year by year and gives visitors the opportunity to view work by 83 photographers, such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Carl de Keyzer, Martin Parr, Susan Meiselas and Leonard Freed.
MAGNUM was established in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour. They were convinced that photography was the best medium with which to document world events and raise public awareness. And they succeeded – the way MAGNUM photographer...

Lise Sarfati achieved widespread acclaim for an arresting series of photographs in the 1990's created in Russian cities, including Moscow, Norilsk and Vorkuta. A fluent Russian speaker, Sarfati focused in this body of work on a kind of brutal ‘bohemia,' and the intensity of life in the midst of post-Soviet decay. Those images proved her to be a sensitive andimaginative obse...
