Joel Sternfeld #Photographe
Joel Sternfeld, (b. 1944, New York City), is widely regarded as one of the most influential and important fine-art color photographers in the world, noted for his large-format documentary pictures of the United States and establishing color photorgaphy as a respected artistic medium. He has many works in the permanent collections of the MOMA in New York and the Getty in Los Angeles. He has also "raised" and influenced an entire generation of color photographers including Andreas Gursky who borrows many of Sternfeld's techniques and approaches.
Sternfeld earned a BA from Dartmouth College and teaches photography at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. He began taking color photographs in 1970 after learning the color theory of Johannes Itten and Josef Albers. Color is an important element of his photographs.
Another book, On This Site: Landscape in Memoriam (1997), is about violence in America. Sternfeld photographed sites of recent tragedies. Next to each photograph is text about the events that happened at that location. From 1991 to 1994 Sternfeld worked with Melinda Hunt to document New York City's public cemetery on Hart Island. A book, "Hart Island" was published in 1998. Sternfeld has also published books about social class and stereotypes in America (Stranger Passing [2001]), an abandoned elevated railway in New York (Walking the High Line [2002]), and a book titled Sweet Earth: Experimental Utopias in America ([2006]). A new book containing close-up portraits of delegates debating global warming at an United Nations conference in Montreal, titled When It Changed, is currently slated for publication in July 2007.

In Joel Sternfeld’s now classic view of America, a fireman shops for a pumpkin while a house burns in the background; a group of motorcyclists stop at the side of the road to take in a stunning, placid view of Bear Lake, Utah; the hi-tech world headquarters of the Manville Corporation sits in picturesque Colorado, obscured by a defiant boulder; a lone basketball net stands in the desert near Lake Powell in Arizona; and a cookie-cutter suburban housing settlement rests squarely amongst rolling hills in Pendleton, Oregon.
Originally published in 1987, Sternfeld’s American Prospects is a search for the truth of a country not just as it exists in a particular era but as it is in its every-evolving essence. As Paris and its shopping arcades were to the 19th Century, Dubai and its wondrous malls may be to the new millennium. The Baudelarian flâneur, is replaced by the phoneur, a wired wanderer who uses the cell phone to text and call and access the internet, all the while snapping digital images on the fly. If the arcades were representative sites of early capitalism, then perhaps the postmodern shopping playgrounds of Dubai are exemplars of advanced capitalism. With this in mind, when Joel Sternfeld visited these malls in 2008, he documented them with the consumer fetish object of the moment – the iPhone. In the process, he achieves a very particular unity of form and content; the object that encapsulates the spirit of an era is used to document that era.
The ramifications of a profusion of mobile phone cameras...Livre Joel Sternfeld Sweet Earth: Experimental Utopias in America Book Description
As laissez-faire market forces sweep the globe and the earth's future seems endangered, the dream of living in concert with nature and with one another is increasingly essential. A common human longing throughout history, the utopian community ideal has taken root firmly in America over the past 200 years. In Sweet Earth: Experimental Utopias in America, Joel Sternfeld looks at 60 representative historic or present American utopias. Neither a conventional history nor a conventional book of photography, Sweet Earth brings together what might otherwise seem disparate, individualized social phenomena and makes visible the community of communities. This tradition of thinking has ancient, universal precedents. When Thomas More wrote Utopia in 1516, he gave a name to an idea that had included the Epic of Gilg...Livre Joel Sternfeld: Walking the High Line From Library Journal
With a large-format camera and an eye for the subtle light of cloudy days, photographer Sternfeld (Stranger Passing) documents the High Line, an elevated railway running along the western edge of Manhattan for just over a mile. The tracks, which have been derelict for more than 20 years, once carried freight to the warehouses and shipping yards along the Hudson. Though the urban landscape is evident billboards, apartment buildings, and warehouses surround the tracks in each shot Sternfeld's focus is on the wildness that now overtakes the High Line, his angles emphasizing the road before him as it sprouts bristling weeds and scrawny trees, or softens into patches of clover, buttercups, and grape hyacinths. Taken from May 2000 to July 2001, the photographs capture the seasonal changes of this surprisi...Exposition Huis Marseille, museum for photography presents the collective exhibition Power/prix pictet

The theme of the fourth cycle of the Prix Pictet is Power which as a theme has great creative reach. Power embraces contradiction and paradox in equal measure. The same forces that result in disaster and despair can also generate hope and renewal. Advances in technology to generate renewable energy mean that the powers of the wind, the sea and the sun can now be converted into sustainable forms of energy.

Foam will be showing more than one hundred photos from ten different series in an exhibition spanning two floors. A highlight is Sternfeld's early work from the 1970s, which has never been previously exhibited. A large selection from famed series such as American Prospects, the result of his legendary journey through the United States, and Stranger Passing will also be on show. A constant factor in his work is his native land America, its inhabitants and the traces left by people on the landscape. With a subtle feeling for irony and an exceptional feeling for color,...Exposition On the Road.
The gallery will be exhibiting a selection of rare and sought after photographs lent from numerous private collections representing some of the most important photographers of the last 100 years.

The opportunity to compare these works side by side reveals the individuality of the century's most iconic photographers. The exhibition spans from the premeditated studio portraits of artists such as Richard Avedon and Irving Penn to the spontaneous street photographs of such masters as Robert Frank and Lee Friedla...Exposition On the Road - Maison Européenne de la Photographie La Maison Européenne de la Photographie présente “On the Road”, une sélection de tirages issus des collections de la MEP et de la Médiathèque de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine autour du thème de la route.

The exhibition shows selected works of the series On This Site, which played an essential role for Joel Sternfeld's oeuvre and its perception. The color photographs were taken in the U.S.A. between 1993 and 1996 and are shown in this focused form for the first time in Germany.
In this sobering collection, Joel Sternfeld looks at places where violence has stained the American Landscape. Arriving long after news photographers have gone, he presents us with the landscape that is left behind, the ordinary site that remains after the tragedy. Free of the sensationalism of contemporary reporting, these unadorned images, and the brief text that accompanies them, have a s...Exposition Joel Sternfeld - The geography of no place: American utopias Buchmann Galerie Berlin is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by American photographer Joel Sternfeld in Germany.
The focus of the exhibition is on selected works of the American Prospects and Sweet Earth series. A special highlight is a large scale photograph from the new series The Field.
The exhibition of these pivotal works permit assessment of a photographer whose contribution to photographic art is profound and far-reaching. As Kerry Brougher states
in the closing of his essay Corrupting Photography:
"[Sternfeld's] shift from spontaneous snapshot to pre-determined picture-making helped open the gates for a new type of photography now practiced by Rineke Dijkstra, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, and Jeff Wall, among many others."
In 1978 Sternfeld set out with a large fo...Modifier l'image
