Through women's eyes : From Diane Arbus to Letizia Battaglia. Passion and courage.
The work of twenty-five photographers has been chosen to direct the viewer's gaze and mind onto a world of diversity, responsibility, compassion, and justice. Antonio Marras has designed the exhibition’s layout in such a way as to transport the viewer into the very heart of the stories that can be read along the walls. The layout is itself an experience within the experience of the exhibition, a fundamental element in the narrative, creating a relationship between the venue’s spaces and the photographic works.
"Through women’s eyes" is a powerful exhibition that speaks about the care lavished on relationships, about our relationship with the other, and about ways of gazing on and observing the world—and where the premise is an innate sense of responsibility. It is also an ambitiou... - Exposition
She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World
In Arabic, the word rawiya means “she who tells a story.” The photographs in this exhibition—made by women with roots in Iran and the Arab world—are themselves a collection of stories.
She Who Tells a Story introduces the pioneering work of 12 leading women photographers who have tackled the very notion of representation with passion and power, questioning tradition and challenging perceptions of Middle Eastern identity. Their provocative work ranges from fine art to photojournalism and provides insights into political and social issues, including questions of personal identity and the complex political and social landscapes of their home regions in images of great sophistication, expressiveness, and beauty. She Who Tells a Story is an invitation not only to discover new photography, but to shi... - Exposition
Shirin Neshat: Afterwards
Mathaf presents a major exhibition of artist Shirin Neshat in fall 2014. The first solo exhibition of the artist in the region, Afterwards shares Neshat's photographic series from the 1990s to the present, including Women of Allah (1993–97), The Book of Kings (2012), and Our House is on Fire (2013). Also on view are video installations Turbulent (1998) and OverRuled (2012), addressing historical, cultural and political realities on which the artist has focused on for the past 30 years.
Composed of layers of information and images, references and concepts, this exhibition is an experience that, through the artist's interrogation of history and acts of building and destroying life, provokes a confrontation with humanities inherent contradictions. For Shirin Neshat, the presumed binaries of black and white,... - Exposition
