Ralph Gibson was born in 1939 in Los Angeles. He took up photography while in the Navy, then pursued his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute (1960-62) and was an assistant to Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank. Gibson's photos often have a dreamy, psychological element, where the gaze plays a vital part. He is especially noteworthy for his contributions as the editor of his own publishing company, Lustrum Press, which has produced a number of seminal books on photography and was one of the first to publish works by photographers such as Robert Frank and Larry Clark.

Kahmann Gallery is proud to present the sales exhibition of the world renowned American photographer Ralph Gibson (1939, USA) as a special collaboration with Duncan Meeder, owner of Foto Henny Hoogeveen/ Leica and Transcontinenta to celebrate the launch of Gibson’s latest book Mono. Kahmann Gallery will have the worldwide premiere of this exhibition, which will open on December 12 and which will travel in 2014 on to all five continents.
Ralph Gibson’s love affair with Leica started in 1961 at the age of 22, when he got hold of his first Leica camera. He was already trained as a photographer in the US Navy and San Francisco Institute of Art, before working as a photojournalist. It was Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot. These poems made a powerful and strange impression. The rhythm of the words conjured up images that came from their position on the page. It was only ten years later that I began to understand the true meaning of sequences of images on a page. It gives us a look into several realities, the lives of famous photographers and their views on life and art. The featured photographers represent classic black-and-white photography. This group exhibition provides a representative overview of the development of fashion photography from its beginnings in the 1920s to the present time.
