Martin Schoeller est né en 1968 à Munich (Allemagne) ou il a grandit. Très jeune il est influencé par le travail hors du commun du portraitiste August Sander qui photographie au début du XXème siècle les gens pauvres, les travailleurs et la bourgeoisie. Son oeil est ensuite attiré par les extraordinaires photos de Bernd et Hilda Becher, qui créeront par la suite la célèbre école Becher-Schüler. De 1993 à 1996, il est l'assistant d'Annie Leibovitz avant de se lancer en tant que photographe freelance. Photographiant les gens qu'il rencontre dans la rue, la force visuelle de ses portraits lui permet très vite de se faire remarquer. Ainsi, à partir de 1998, ses portraits son publiés dans Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ, Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, Vanity Fair and W. En 1999, il rejoint Richard Avedon en tant que portraitiste attitré du célèbre magazine The New Yorker pour lequel il continue de travailler. Son 1er livre, « Close Up », est sorti en 2005, publié par Te Neues. Ses portraits sont exposés et collectionnés dans le monde entier. Ils ont fait l'objet de plusieurs expositions solo & sont dans la collection de la National Portrait Gallery, Smithonian Institute,Washington, DC. Martin Schoeller vit et travaille à New York. Martin Schoeller, who began his career in Germany, worked as an assistant for Annie Leibovitz from 1993 to 1996. He advanced as a freelance photographer producing portraits of people he met on the street and his work gained recognition for its strong visual impact. Schoeller's work has appeared in Rolling Stone, GQ, Esquire, Entertainment Weekly, and W, among others. Schoeller joined Richard Avedon as contributing portrait photographer at The New Yorker in 1999. Schoeller's book «Close Up» was published in 2005 by teNeues. His portraits are exhibited and collected internationally, including several solo exhibitions in Europe and the US and the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
