In 1978 Luigi Ghirri self-published his first book, an avant-garde manifesto for the medium of photography and a landmark in his own remarkable oeuvre. Kodachrome has long been out of print and on the 20th anniversary of Ghirri’s death, MACK is proud to publish the second edition.

While the world evaporates into the digital, the anachronistic Polaroid snapshot dominates media and advertising. The recent sale of the photography collection owned by Polaroid’s inventor Edwin Land to the Viennese photography museum WestLicht marks an art-market trend toward the analog. Beginning in the sixties, Polaroid supplied artists around the world, from Ansel Adams to Andy Warhol, with each one of the imperium’s latest products. In return, 4,400 works by 800 photographers found their way into the company’s International Collection at their European headquarters near Frankfurt am Main. What to See at Fotografia Europea 2016
The 11th edition of the Fotografia Europea international festival of photography promises to be one of the biggest and best yet, with a program of exhibitions, conferences, performances, educational initiatives, and other events taking place throughout the Municipality of Reggio Emilia in Northern Italy from May 6 through July 10, 2016.
The theme of Fotografia Europea 2016, “The Via Emilia. Roads, Journeys, Borders,” is focused on the topic of roads, starting from what the curators of the festival describe as “the major Roman road that runs ‘from the river to the sea’” and extending to “the byways of the world, the places of transit, and borders in today’s society.”

Milan Image Art Fair 2011
La première édition du Milan Image Art Fair se tiendra cette année à Milan en Italie du 13 au 15 mai 2011. Ce festival dédié à la photographie et à la vidéo est le premier du genre en Italie. 200 exposants sont attendus ; des artistes, des galeries, des laboratoires photographiques, des maisons d'éditions... Le tout sur une surface de 8000 mètres carrés.

L’année 2012 est l’année de l’eau. Un important colloque et de nombreuses rencontres sur cette thématique auront lieu sur le territoire des Bouches-du-Rhône. Dans ce cadre, la collectivité a souhaité que ses principaux lieux d’exposition proposent un temps dédié à cet élément. Dans le même esprit que l’exposition sur le cirque « Parade », il a été demandé à Agnès de Gouvion Saint-Cyr, spécialiste de la création photographique et commissaire de l’exposition, de donner à voir plusieurs époques et divers traitements de cet élément par les yeux des plus grands photographes.

Luigi Ghirri was a pioneer of contemporary colour photography. His work from the early 1970s until his death in 1992 forms part of a conceptual photographic tradition that shifted attention away from the manual processes involved in creating an object onto an examination of the nature of that object and its relation to the reality recorded by photography.
A key to Ghirri’s artistic vision is provided by a passage he wrote in response to the first photograph taken of the Earth from Space by the Apollo 11 space craft in 1969 …it held within it all previous, incomplete images, all books that had been written, all signs, those that had been deciphered and those that had not. [.] Until the end of the 19th Century only very few people had travelled beyond the borders of their own birthplace. Initially, the less privileged "discovered" the landscapes of others only through dramatic experiences such as war and emigration. Between 1903 and 1913 ten million poor citizens left Italy; most of them, and almost all the six million that went to the Americas never returned. So they got to know new landscapes but forever lost their own. Something analogous happened with the First World War. My maternal great-grandfather, for example, left our town for the very first time to go and "serve" a Homeland he certainly could not have perceived as close to him, he saw the Dolomites without returning to see the citrus orchards.
