Walter Astrada was born in 1974 in Buenos Aires (Argentina).
In 1996 he started his career as staff photographer in La Nacion newspaper (Argentina).
During 1999 he traveled around Brazil, Chile, Bolivia and Peru developing a personal project on "Faith".
In September 1999 he joined Associated Press in Bolivia and later in Argentina.
From 2000 to 2002 he worked for the Associated Press based in Paraguay, from where he covered events in Latin America and World Cup Korea-Japan 2002
During 2003 he worked as a freelancer in Buenos Aires and Madrid.
At the end of 2003 he rejoined the Associated Press based in the Dominican Republic, covering events in the Caribbean countries.
From March 2005 until March 2006 he worked as a freelancer for Agence France Presse in the Dominican Republic and was represented and distributed by World Picture News.
In March 2006 he moved to Spain.
Currently he is working as a freelancer.

The ceremony at which the World Press Photo of the Year and the category awards are presented, is the highlight of the Awards Days held annually in Amsterdam during the last week of April or the first week of May.
The awards ceremony also marks the official opening of the first exhibition of the season. All prizewinners are invited to Amsterdam to receive their awards in person, and hundreds of photographers and associated professionals travel to the city. Dépêché le 7 février 2009 à Madagascar par l’AFP pour couvrir la crise politique qui fait alors rage à Antanarivo, il est le seul photojournaliste pour témoigner des affrontements sanglants entre la population et la garde du président Ravalomanana.

Les années 2008 et 2009 resteront sans doute à marquer d’une croix noire dans l’histoire du photojournalisme… Nombreuses sont les agences à pratiquer des forfaits ("vous nous payez une somme forfaitaire, et vous utilisez toutes les photos dont vous avez besoin"), très attirants pour des magazines et quotidiens dirigés par des gens qui n’ont en tête que la rentabilité, à deux chiffres si possible… On devrait aussi parler du tarif unique (« servez-vous, pour une vignette ou une double, c’est le même prix ! »), et de la généralisation de l’usage des photos DR, souvent gracieusement fournies par les services de presse ou de communication.

La Nuit de la Photo®, créée et organisée par Sandrine Bourbigot, a pour but de donner à voir dans des cadres exceptionnels le travail de photographes professionnels talentueux, tout en mettant l’accent sur des causes humanitaires. Cette année, les droits des otages et ex-otages seront défendus. La deuxième Nuit de la Photo® aura pour cadre le Théâtre Antique d’Orange. Le célèbre mur de scène permettra l’installation optimale de l’écran de 100 m2. La projection de nuit, de grande qualité aura lieu le samedi 11 juin 2011, durera de 21 heures 30 à 1 h du matin et sera payante. Le parrain de cette édition est Philippe Rochot, prix Albert Londres.

FotoPres es uno de los concursos de fotografía de prensa con más historia y reconocimiento del Estado español. El certámen se organiza con el objetivo de dar a conocer y difundir la fotografía documental, y contribuir a la consolidación, en nuestro país, del documentalismo contemporáneo. Cada dos años la Fundación ”la Caixa” otorga seis becas a proyectos fotográficos inéditos y tres premios a trabajos realizados en los últimos dos años.
La exposición muestra las propuestas seleccionadas como premios y becas en la edición del año 2009. Se trata de proyectos con un alto contenido social, que ofrecen un análisis intenso de la actualidad.
