Vee Speers -The birthday party
The Birthday Party is a collection of children’s portraits. Speers has stripped away the stereotypes of childhood in a far cry from the usual idealisation of the ‘happiest days of our lives’. She reveals the cruelty, vulnerability and duplicity of children. She captures children happy to play with imperfection and embrace the grotesque; children with a sense of danger and disregard for the social expectations of a birthday party smile.
The resulting visuals are unsettling, with a transparency that is neither black and white nor colour, and the humanity neither that of an adult nor of a child.... - Festival

- Exposition

The new series follows six years after her infamous series The Birthday Party. Continuing the theme Speers now photographs these same children. Since then, much has changed - their bodies are taller, longer. Their faces have thinned and transformed. Speers has recorded it. She has taken them to imaginary lands, playing fields, and curious places where these characters are ever prepared and always win. Vee Speers eternalises the fragile beauty of adolescence. She photographs a time that follows the f... - Exposition

« She shows beauty where beauty can be terribly absent » Karl Lagerfeld
The romantic decadence of Paris nightlife in the 1920s and 30s (eternalized most famously by the photographs of Brassai) comes to life afresh in this series of sensuous photos shot on location in former bordellos where the lavish decors have survived intact.
Vee Speers, an Australian artist who has lived in Paris for more than 20 years, has created edgy photos that play with seduction, sensuality and femininity.
The photographs have been printed using a hand-rendered Fresson charcoal process which gives a more authentic, painterly quality to the images.

- Exposition
Vee Speers - Immortal
Vee Speers is an Australian artist living in Paris. She studied fine art and photography in Brisbane which was followed by a five year career in Sydney with the ABC television as a stills photographer. A short stay in France in 1990 became a permanent move to Paris, which for Speers is a place with ‘unlimited potential and endless creative inspiration.
In 2002, her passion for life backstage in the cabarets of Pigalle inspired her to revisit the smokey, 1920’s world of les maisons closes in Paris, using the backdrop of actual opulent locations which still remain intact today. During this period, Speers also began photographing eccentric people she met along the way, satisfying her attraction to those who dare to be different. But it was not until she turned towards her own childhood and family for insp... - Exposition

You Aren't Happy At All!: Vee Speers' "Birthday Party" Series
The list of photo artists who have taken the theme of childhood for themselves is long. That's understandable, for it is a rewarding photographic subject. What's fascinating is the position of in-between, the ambiguity of being a child: The child's ego is fragile, there are plenty of options. Is this only at the beginning: in a paradisiacal state, as has often been written?
When Vee Speers places children in front of the same white wall to photograph them in their costumes for the "Birthday Party" series, one might at first wonder about this visual concept. We tend to associate childhood with spontaneous movement rather than immobility. This is different with Vee Speers: Her models act within a strictly laid-out frame.

Vee Speers' most recent work is The Birthday Party, a collection of portraits of children inspired by her daughter's birthday party. Having observed children playing at being adults, Speers imagined what characters they would create if they pushed their role-playing to imaginative extremes. In these photographs she has stripped away the idealistic stereotypes of childhood to question the adult idealisation of...
