Antanas Sutkus, b. 1939, a true legend, dedicated his life to documenting the life of Lithuania, focusing on the dignity of the human. In the beginning of 2006, while moving from an appartment to a new house, he learned that his lifetime archive of appr. 1 mln negatives weighted 5 tons. His key occupation today is studying the old negatives and creating exhibitions and books under the title "Archives of the Routine".

A new Eastern Europe arose after 1989. The Iron Curtain disappeared, the street scene changed unrecognizably. Some countries disintegrated, a majority have become members of the European Union. After four decades of Communism, capitalism is the new ideology. Individualism has replaced collectivism, opposition politics is again permitted. The heroic worker has had to become a critical consumer.
As a mirror held up to Behind Walls, a second exhibition, Beyond Walls, provides a picture of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Left opposes right, nostalgia for the old days faces off against the blessings of capitalism. Among the remains of the Communist era - from the gray architecture to the discrimination against ethnic groups - a frantic search for a new identity is going on.

Essentiellement photographique, ponctué de quelques touches dessinées, ce portrait qu’on veut dresser est un portrait impossible car fugace. C’est une question de goût, d’époque, de sensibilité de spectateur. L’élégance, c’est quelque chose de personnel et d'intemporel à la fois.

From April 7 to May 29, 2016, the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography will hold an exhibition of Antanas Sutkus Nostalgia for bare feet. The exhibition will feature more than one hundred works created by the master of Lithuanian photography between 1959 and 1979, many of which have never been shown before.

Antanas Sutkus is widely recognized as the forefather and inspirer of Lithuanian school of photography, which flourished on the western outskirts of the Soviet Union during the 1950s–1970s. Since his childhood, Sutkus dreamed of becoming a journalist. From 1958 to 1964, he studied at Vilnius University, where he became disillusioned with Soviet journalism and began to devote himself to photography. He was at the roots of the famous Lithuanian Association of Art Photographers ...
La galerie RTR présente les « Inédites » d’Antanas Sutkus, des photographies peu vues ou jamais publiées, découvertes cette année dans ses archives composées de 500 000 négatifs.
Il y a deux ans, Antanas Sutkus, le photographe lituanien de 75 ans, connu et reconnu dans le monde de la photographie internationale, décide de ranger ses archives…. Il y redécouvre de nombreux négatifs de la fin des années 50 à la fin des années 70 qui n'avaient jamais été tirés sur papier.
Le photographe plonge alors dans ses trésors qui couvrent une des périodes les plus importantes de son oeuvre, et, aidé par la galerie RTR, en ressort 35 « nouvelles » images...
Cette année 15 photographes ont été sélectionnés. Comme d’ordinaire, une partie des artistes a été découverte au cours de lectures de portfolios ainsi que par notre veille artistique. Et pour la première fois, une sélection a été opérée après un appel à candidatures lancé courant 2012. Celui-ci portait sur le thème de la biennale « Le fil d’Ariane », qui explore la notion de « Trajectoire ». La Galerie Le Lieu a ainsi réceptionné et étudié 130 dossiers d’artistes d’horizons variés, dont seule une poignée a rejoint cette édition : Françoise Beauguion, Stéphane C., Le Collectif Faux Amis, Alexis Cordesse, Julia Menesguen, Sylvie Tubiana, Estelle Zolotoff.

Twelve years ago Anya Stonelake arrived in London and started White Space Gallery. In that time she has missed twelve Russian winters in her beloved St Petersburg and twelve Baltic springs but it is our good fortune that we have not. Thanks to Anya we have discovered the freshness of the New Artists and Timur Novikov from St Petersburg and the poetry of unknown Baltic photographers. Her acute sense of both what has happened and what is happening has introduced the British public to new artists and photographers from 21st century Russia and Lithuania. She has also curated the work of the Portuguese photographer Jose Pedro Cortes and our own Martin Parr.

La galerie RTR, en collaboration avec la galerie Agathe Gaillard, présente une exposition « Amours Libres » de Jean-Philippe Charbonnier et d’Antanas Sutkus. 45 tirages, pour la plupart vintages, de deux maîtres de la photographie humaniste.
Le photographe est un amant, un frère, un ami. Il est empli d'amour pour l'autre, et l'image est à la fois un média et un message qu'il adresse à ceux qu'il photographie. C'est en tout cas ce que Charbonnier et Sutkus défendent en même temps, à quelques milliers de kilomètres l'un de l'autre, et dans des contextes bien différents.

The exhibition Reality Revisited includes more than 300 photographs from the 1970s, all in the Moderna Museet Collection of photography. It gives us a look into several realities, the lives of famous photographers and their views on life and art. The featured photographers represent classic black-and-white photography. They have used the medium in various ways to develop their own expressive style through the photographic image. Postwar street photography and subjective photography were seminal to the photographers whose careers began in the 1960s and peaked in the 1970s before the breakthrough of postmodern photo-based art in the early 1980s. Anya Stonelake/White Space Gallery proudly presents Lithuanian Portraits, an exhibition of works by Lithuania's most celebrated photographer, Antanas Sutkus (b. 1939 -). A master of monochrome documentary photography, Sutkus has had a strong influence on the development of photography in the Baltic. His lucid and extraordinary images of everyday events in his Lithuanian homeland have been compared to the humanistic approach of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Andre Kertesz.
Sutkus' body of work bears witness to the country's subjection to Soviet rule, presenting a visual history of Communism in an objective but humanistic documentary style. Throughout, it is the daily trials of ordinary Lithuanians from rural villages that tell the story.

White Space Gallery is pleased to announce first UK solo exhibition by Antanas Sutkus (born 1939), Lithuania's most famous photographer. As leader of the "Great generation" of Lithuanian photographers who made their mark in the 1960s, Sutkus has been a strong influence on subsequent development of photography in the Baltic country. His lucid and moving images of everyday life have been compared to the work of the greats of 20th-century photojournalism such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Andre Kertesz.
This exhibition will present his most important work, including his series People of Lithuania, an ongoing project begun in 1976, which shows the changing life of Sutkus's homeland. Also on display will...
