This annual award of £30,000 rewards a living photographer, of any nationality, who has made the most significant contribution to the medium of photography in Europe between 1 October 2007 and 30 September 2008.
The four shortlisted artists for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2009 are:

Emily Jacir (b.1970, Palestine) is nominated for her installation, Material for a Film, presented at the 2007 Venice Biennale (7 June – 21 November 2007).

Acclaimed photographer Tod Papageorge has been head of photography at the Yale School of Art since 1979 and is a pivotal figure in the development of an elegant, American, street-savvy style. Coinciding with an exhibition at the Michael Hoppen Gallery, he talks about his work and that of friends and contemporaries.

The 40 works range from early black and white photographs to the classic icons of American color photography.
A number of great photographers played a large role in forming and defining the American Myth. The discovery of everyday aspects of American life was decisive in this: cities and symbols, cars, signs, billboards, advertising, telephone poles, parking lots and barbershops.
People are a second aspect of the wide-ranging exhibition, from the years of the Great Depression to impressive portraits of celebrities.
The comparison of almost a century of American photographs results in an interesting structure of similarities and contrasts, which are balanced through the selective choice of images.

Sexy and the City shows the alluring, romantic and sometimes scandalous side of New York's people and places. Capturing private, intimate moments and blatant displays of sexuality, these photographs span the decades from the 1940s to the present day, taken in landmark locations like the Brooklyn Bridge and in the quiet, out-of-the-way corners of the city.

Tod Papageorge Passing through Eden
We are delighted to announce the first UK solo exhibition of work by Tod Papageorge. Taken between 1969 and 1991, these black and white photographs capture the primeval character of Central Park, the human tragedy and comedy in this particular vision of Eden.
During the 1970s, when Papageorge began to work on this series, Central Park was portrayed as a dangerous place not to be visited after dark. These photographs depict a different view showing innocence, beauty, ugliness, isolation, chaos and humour - the whole scope of human life on view within the park. Papageorge parallels this series with the first four books of Genesis, pulling the disparate images together by presenting the park as a public Eden, his elegy to a lost Elysium.
