Josef Sudek (1896–1976) spent nearly his entire life in Prague, where he created a body of work of extraordinary complexity. Recognized as one of the most significant photographers of the twentieth century, Sudek was also a cult figure in his homeland. Timm Rautert: Deutsche in Uniform
In shooting these landmark 1974 portraits of Deutsche in Uniform, Timm Rautert met his subjects in their own territories, but then set them against a neutral background, separating them from their work aesthetics. This portable studio setting gives special significance to the moment of representation, when the subject is captured as a symbol of the state or an occupational group. By using not only names and job titles but also quotes from interviews, Rautert also prompts observers to focus on the subject or the connection between the individual's gestures and his official work clothes. In contrast to today's professional clothing, which is transformed into outfits by logos, the uniforms he photographed reflect a time of social upheaval. Qu’est-ce que la photographie? Depuis son invention, cette question n’a cessé d’être posée.
En suivant ce fil rouge et une cinquantaine d’œuvres emblématiques d’une trentaine d’artistes, l’exposition présentée propose une traversée inédite de l’histoire de la photographie moderne
et contemporaine. Elle se tient dans un espace nouvellement ouvert au cœur du Centre Pompidou, la Galerie de photographies.

Inspiration Photomaton au Musée de l'Elysée
Lorsque les premières cabines de photomaton furent installées à Paris en 1928, les surréalistes en firent un usage intensif et compulsif. En quelques minutes, et pour une somme modique, la machine leur offrait, dans le domaine du portrait, une expérience similaire à celle de l’écriture automatique. Depuis, des générations d’artistes ont été fascinées par le principe du photomaton. De Andy Warhol à Arnulf Rainer, en passant par Thomas Ruff, Cindy Sherman, ou Gillian Wearing, ils sont nombreux à s’être emparé du photomaton pour jouer avec leur identité, raconter des histoires, ou faire des mondes.

In the exhibition the complex work of one of the most renowned German photographers is to be discovered. The exhibition is the third station of a cooperation between the Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig and the Sprengel Museum Hanover.
Timm Rautert was born in 1941. He was pupil of Otto Steinert at the Folkwang School in Essen. From 1970 onwards he worked as a photojournalist for numerous magazines as for example the ZEITmagazin. From 1993 to 2007 he was a professor for photography at the Leipzig Academy for Book Design and Graphic Arts in Leipzig. In his series he shows the changes in the world of work or religious groups like the Hutterer and the Amish or creates portraits of artists as Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter and Joseph Beuys.
