Sohei Nishino at Michael Hoppen Gallery
The Diorama Maps project is a joyous mixture of photography and cartography, inspired in part by the 18th century Japanese map-maker Ino Tadataka. To make his “Diorama Maps,” Sohei Nishino spends months in a city, exploring its many vantage points. The effect is not a traditional bird’s-eye view but a wonderfully fragmented, enlightened way of seeing three dimensions in one plane.
Nishino's more recent maps see his talent and skill much matured. They have all the detail and playfulness of his earlier Dioramas, and now also added elements, such as his insertion of colour photogra... - Exposition

Sohei Nishino is one of the rising stars of contemporary Japanese photography. Discovered in 2008 by Michael Hoppen, 28 year old Nishino’s extraordinary photographic dioramas, monumental in size, map out the artist’s personal impressions of the world’s major cities in several thousand intimate details.
Never before exhibited outside of Asia, Michael Hoppen Contemporary will present the Diorama Map series for his inaugural European show, featuring twelve of the artist's most striking works. Inspired by Japanese cartography and gifted with an impressive power of observation, his extraordinary maps are a r...
