Bien que Roy Schatt soit célèbre pour avoir photographié de nombreux acteurs et autres stars du moment, son travail est l'antithèse de la photographie « glamour » . Il rechercha inexorablement le moment d'inattention chez son model. Schatt était également un acteur au style émotif, ainsi on surnomma ses photographies « Méthode (1) » à cause de nombreux parallèles avec la révolution qui arriva dans le milieu des acteurs. Le célèbre professeur Lee Strasberg souligna ce lien lorsqu'il nomma Schatt photographe officiel de Actor's Studio.

Les photographies de James Dean sont l'accomplissement de sa carrière. Plusieurs années après, il se rappelait avoir été hypnotisé par James Dean lors de leur première rencontre : « Il était recourbé sur lui-même et paraissait assez louche. Puis Dean se leva d'un coup et cette hideuse personne devint un songe, un Adonis qui commença à danser à travers la pièce. Cette transformation, je n'ai pu la croire. » Dean étudia la photographie avec Schatt et devinrent très proches.
Durant leurs longues années d'amitié, Schatt et Dean formèrent un parfait tandem photographe/acteur, dont sont issues les photos les plus populaires de Dean. « James Dean était un acteur de méthode (1) » nous explique Schatt, « étant moi-même acteur je pouvais identifier cet instinct théâtral. L'inspiration des scènes vinrent du fait de diriger et de provoquer. Mais la photographie devait être honnête et intéressante au-delà de l'exécution.
En janvier 1955, Edward Steichen fit l'acquisition d'une des ses photographies pour la collection du Musée d'art moderne. Son travail fut présenté à la galerie Staley-Wise de Soho, au ICP de Manhattan, à la Galerie Nationale de Portrait de Washington, au DC et Chicago Art Institut. Le deuxième livre de Roy Schatt « Faces of the 50's » est le dernier hommage rendu par le milieu des éditeurs nationaux et internationaux.

Acclaimed photographer Roy Schatt studied painting with N.C. Wyeth and worked for the prestigious advertising agency BBDO in the 1930s in New York. His focus was always photography, while also working as a professional director and actor. During the 50s, he lived in Greenwich Village, the vibrant artistic epicenter of the epoch, and befriended creative personalities. Schatt's forte in portrait photography and his sensibility as an actor allowed him to capture the most genuine, even vulnerable, emotions of his subjects. Famed director Lee Strasberg recognized his caliber as a photographer and named Schatt the Official Photographer of the Actor's Studio.
