Rafal Milach was born in 1978 in Gliwice, Poland and now is based in Warsaw. Rafal attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, where he received a Masters of Fine Art degree in 2002. He also earned a Bachelor degree of Photography from the Institute for Creative Photography (ITF) in Opava, Czech Republic in 2003. In 2004 Rafal was invited to take part in training for emerging photojournalists form Eastern and Central Europe organized by prestigious agency VII in France.

La planche-contact est la première concrétisation physique du travail d'un photographe. Sa première confrontation avec son travail et ses idées. L'étape qui suit, celle de la sélection à partir de la planche-contact, est décisive. Lorsque le spectateur apprécie une œuvre photographique, il ne réalise pas que le cliché qu'il a sous les yeux a été choisi précisément au milieu de beaucoup d'autres, et que, très souvent, c'est uniquement un petit détail qui a pu faire basculer le choix de l'artiste.

Rafał Milach presents the stories of Russians who were born in the USSR, but whose adult lives run their course in the Russia of Vladimir Putin. This is a tale of ordinary people, of their friends and family, and of the world in which they live. In Milach’s photographs are to be found neither extremism nor sensationalism. We observe the everyday life of representatives of the generation of thirty-somethings that the photographer has been a witness to over the course of the last six years. “I have been through three phases in my relationships with my heroes. First, they were my guides through their cities, then they became the heroes of my photos, and then finally they became friends with whom I talk more than I photograph”,’ the artist explains.

Rafal has been travelling to Ukrainian costal towns and places, meeting with local people. He has documented the change in lives of these people, strongly influenced by long lasting USSR history and recent political events, and their specific relation and coexistence with the sea. Telling a Ukrainian story by connecting seascapes, portraits of locals dressed in their working uniforms and images of everyday life, Rafal created a powerful portrait of the Black Sea. The portrait of the Black Sea is dominated by massive concrete which appears as a relict of the past Soviet times that still directs and marks people's lives.
