Vente Lempertz - Photography Auctions in Cologne Auction 1068: Photography
Friday, 3 June 2016 2pm
Highlight of this sale is a group of vintage prints by Albert Renger-Patzsch, which includes his famous image "Natterkopf" from 1925. The exceptional work was published in 1928 in his photo book "Die Welt ist schön" (lot 20, €15,000–20,000). The piece was made together with two other animal portraits at Dresden Zoo (lots 18/19, each est. €5,000-6,000) and due to its fascinatingly abstract graphic qualities it has become one of Renger-Patzsch’s most famous works. "Natterkopf" will be coming under the hammer for the first time, together with a selection of other plant, object and landscape photographs by the artist.
A further top lot is an early 1920s vintage print of Karl Blossfeldt’s "Salvia Argent...Vente Auction " Modern and Contemporary Photographs ", June 3 2015 Auction No. 238 | Wednesday, June 3, 2015 | 5.30 p.m at Villa Grisebach Auktionen

The Order of Things investigates the production and uses of serial portraiture, conceptual structures, vernacular imagery, and time-based performance in photography from the 1880s to the present, bringing together works by artists from Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Curated by Brian Wallis, former Chief Curator at the International Center of Photography in New York, the exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Steidl/The Walther Collection.

Exhibited together for the first time, these images capture the richness and variety of the photographic medium between the First and Second World Wars.
The creative possibilities explored through photography were never richer or more varied than in the years between the First and Second World Wars, when photographers approached figuration, abstraction, and architecture with unmatched imaginative fervor. This vital moment is dramatically captured in the more than 300 photographs that constitute the Thomas Walther Collection at The Museum of Modern Art. This remarkable group of objects is presented together for the first time to coincide with the culmin...Exposition Still Life & Death - works by Hendrik Faure & Karl Blossfeldt

It is a great pleasure and honour for us to present such a unique collection of artists that have shaped the development of photography as an art form, says Jens R Jenssen, senior vice president of human resources and leader of the Statoil art programme. And he continues: This exhibition will make a difference.
The exhibition consists of approximately 180 works of photography, spanning from the 1842 to 2002. With a unique collection of original Irving Penns as a basis, the diversity of the collection is presented in a wide number of small exhibitions within the main concept, says Arnt N Fredheim, curator, the Statoil art programme. It’s like a dream has come trough, he continues, as the possibility to make an exhibition of legendary photographers like William Henry Fox Talbot, Edward Weston, Karl Blossfeldt...Exposition Karl Blossfeldt : original plant prints Blossfeldt (Germany, 1865) was self-taught and since his youth a great lover of nature. As sculptor and modeller in a foundry for artwork, he used flowers and plants as inspiration for decorations. His participation in a study project in Italy under the guidance of Moritz Meurer in the 1890s became a turning point in his career for it was during this project that Blossfeldt began to systematically collect and photograph plants.
His documentation served an artistic rather than scientific purpose. Blossfeldt wanted to study archetypes of nature through means of photography. Just as his teacher Meurer, he believed that archetypes were a source of inspiration for architecture, drawing and painting. Blossfeldt photographed flowers and other plants with the aid of hand-made large-format cameras. He had a preferen...Exposition Karl Blossfeldt Blossfeldt (Germany, 1865) was self-taught and since his youth a great lover of nature. Blossfeldt's photographs will be accompanied by the artist's herbaria and sculptures based on plants, the latter produced in cooperation with his teacher Moritz Meurer. The amalgamation and presentation of the various groups of work from the Berlin Blossfeldt collection provides detailed insight into the working style of the artist, who taught the study of natural forms in Berlin for over thirty years. His plant photographs were used primarily as reference aids during lessons in his classes. It was only towards the end of his working life that his photographs became known to the larger public through an...Modifier l'image
