Née en 1972, Hellen Van Meene est une portraitiste néerlandaise. Ses modèles favoris sont les « young people », selon ses propres termes. Il ne s’agit pas simplement des adolescents, c’est un terme plus général et plus juste pour qualifer sa photographie, surannée, désenchantée. Tout ce qui n’est pas entré dans l’âge adulte, responsabilisé et déjà mourant en fait partie. Ses portraits sont mélancoliques, ses sujets sont perdus, peut-être trop lucides face au monde qui les entoure. Elle aime travailler seule et ne comprend pas vraiment quand on lui parle des difficultés du photographe en 2010.

Best known for her portraits of young girls in various stages of adolescence, van Meeneʼs photographs are characterized by their exquisite use of light, formal elegance and palpable psychological tension. Recently, the artistʼs portraiture projects have explored the use of animals as subject, whilst retaining the signature style and formalism of previous work.
