Quelle perception e...
One of the most comprehensive and significant collections of portrait photography from India is on exhibit for the first time. The collection of the Ethnological Museum was originally thought to be lost during World War II, only returning to Berlin beginning in the 1990s. Albert Thomas Watson Penn, Bourne & Shepherd, John Burke, Francis Frith, Westfield & Co, Edward Taurines, A.W.A. Platé & Co, Shepherd & Robertson, Samuel Bourne, W.L.H. Skeen & Co present here their pictures.
Now, around 300 photographs from the second half of the nineteenth century offer a comprehensive overview of portrait photography from the Indian subcontinent. In addition to pictures by renowned photographers and studios such as Samuel Bourne, Shepherd & Robertson, A.T.W. Penn, and John Burke, works by lesser...
Capture the past. That was the assignment photographers Bruno Vandermeulen and Danny Veys were given at the archaeological site of Sagalassos in Turkey. How does a photographer approach the past? When photographing the ancient city, Vandermeulen and Veys decided not just to record the archaeological finds, but to question the very objectivity of the lens itself.
This was the starting point for Imaging History. How does one look at something that is no longer there? Do we have enough imagination, or does it vary according to the vision of the photographer? Along with Vandermeulen and Veys, five internationally renowned photographers - Shimon Attie (USA, 1957), Raphaël Dallaporta (FR, 1980) Sally Mann (USA, 1951), Bart Michiels (BE, °1964) and Simon Norfolk (NGA, 1963) - present a series of images and appro...
The exhibition focuses on three classical travel destinations: Egypt, the Levant, i.e. Palestine and Lebanon, which were part of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, and the states of pre-unified Italy. The majority of exhibits show art monuments and landscapes, flanked by a number of photographs of daily life and portraits of individuals. The three regions are depicted in images that vividly portray their architectural subject or strikingly capture the atmosphere of the scene regardless of how well the site is known. During selection, special attention was paid to correlating the examples of architectural and landscape photography and making comparisons. Outstanding, compelling photographs have been obtained for the exhibition on loan from the rich collections of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums(rem)/Forum Internationa...
