Stefanie Moshammer is one of the most exciting new artists who emerged from the Austrian photography scene in the last few years. It comes as no surprise that magazines are queuing to work with her, among them Zeit and Sueddeutsche magazine, and that she has just been picked for the prestigious FOAM Talents 2016 edition. Her works combine photojournalistic research and subjective sensibility with an almost magical command over composition and colour. From 6 October OstLicht Gallery presents her personal portraits of two mythical places: Las Vegas, an oasis of neon lights and Black Jack in the middle of the desert and Rio de Janeiro, metropolis of Ipanema and Sugarloaf Mountain. In "Vegas and She" Moshammer followed the workers of the ubiquitous adult entertainment industry through a city of surfaces.

"Land of Black Milk" is the title of her newest series about Rio as a divided city, which will be exhibited comprehensively at OstLicht for the first time. For this project Moshammer wandered around the favelas of Rio, the gang quarters, but also home to those people who with their labour keep comfortable life in the richer areas going. The city is delineated as an urban sprawl of tenements, plants, men, colours and commodities, a place of extreme differences where the only thing shared by everybody is the pastel-coloured sky.

Stefanie Moshammer, born 1988 in Vienna, studied visual communication at Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna, graphic design and photography at Kunstuniversität Linz as well as Advanced Visual Storytelling at Danish School of Media and Journalism in Aarhus. Her photographs have been published in numerous magazines such as i-D, Zeit Magazin, Sueddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Vice and Der Greif. "Vegas and She" was presented in an exhibition at Fotohof Salzburg, the accompanying book published by Fotohof edition was nominated for the Author Book Award at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2015. Her most recent series "Land of Black Milk" was selected for the FOAM Talents 2016.
