Purpose 10 - printemps 2010

New York—Swann Galleries’ December 12 auction of Classic Photographs & Photobooks offers many examples of envelope-pushing photobooks exploring sexual themes, a run of Pop Art works in the photographic medium by Andy Warhol and a group of ephemeral news images of the assassination of JFK and its aftermath.
Among the sex books by Japanese artists are Document Kouen, in which photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki captured nighttime rendezvous in Tokyo parks circa 1980 (pre-sale estimate: $800 to $1,200); Ikko Kagari’s Document Tsuken Densha [Document Tsuken Express Train], which documents the “ch... - Exposition
Exhibition : « Acts of Intimacy: The Erotic Gaze in Japanese Photography »
Press Release - Acts of Intimacy: The Erotic Gaze in Japanese Photography brings together three key photographic series by the Japanese artists Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, and Kohei Yoshiyuki-- each of whom has given special attention to the role of eroticism and sexual subcultures in Japanese society.
Araki's "101 Works for Robert Frank (Private Diary)" (1993) is an editioned version of the images contained in a unique scrapbook that Araki presented to photographer Robert Frank. Made during a time when Araki was emerging from a long period of mourning after the death of his wife Yoko, the photographs constitute an extended self-portrait of a man slowly reawakening to the pleasures of life.

The Park - Kohei Yoshiyuki
Shot in three Tokyo parks during the early seventies, The Park is a series of black and white photographs capturing couples meeting up for clandestine trysts and, more provocatively, the voyeurs who came out to watch them. First exhibited in 1979 at Komai Gallery in Tokyo, the uproar surrounding his methods caused these photographs to be hidden from the public for the next 28 years.
Mr. Yoshiyuki first stumbled upon this hidden world while photographing skyscrapers in front of Chuo Park in Shinjuku at night when he witnessed a couple having sex and quickly discovered an entire scene of young lovers—and their peepers. He soon returned with an inconspicuous 35mm camera, a filtered flash and infrared film, and began shooting these heteroand homosexual couplings, along with their spectators lurking in the bushes.

Kohei Yoshiyuki The park
Brancolini Grimaldi is pleased to announce "The Park", an exhibition of black-and-white photographs from the 1970s by Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki. This will be Mr. Yoshiyuki's first solo exhibition in Italy.
For these photographs, taken in Tokyo's Shinjuku, Yoyogi, and Aoyama parks during the 1970s, Mr. Yoshiyuki used a 35mm camera, infrared film, and flash to document the people who gathered there at night for clandestine trysts, as well as the many spectators lurking in the bushes who watched-and sometimes participated in-these couplings. With their raw, snapshot-like quality, these images not only uncover the hidden sexual exploits of their subjects, both homosexual and heterosexual, but also provoke questions about our own attitudes towards surveillance and voyeurism.
Collectively, these photo... - Exposition
