Fanny is an extended portrait of a young girl's transition from child to woman. Made over a period of 23 years, the images are at once beautiful in their detail of light and identity, as well as frankly anthropological in their descriptive effect. A naturist since birth, Fanny's comfort with nudity and her natural self has allowed Sturges to draw an engaging portrait of the evolution of a human being with few social distractions. His access to the girl's and woman's character is direct and fascinating. Long known for his extended portraits of children and adolescents, this book is strong evidence of Sturges' permanent commitment to the people in his work. ...
Ever since the appearance of Sturges'work in the public arena in the 1980s, he has been a focal point of an intense dialogue involving the differences between nudity and sexuality, the human figure, youth, and questions of appropriateness. In Notes, boldly published by Aperture, an early champion of his work, Sturges sets out to "open the door wide enough to offer insight into my methods." In service to that ambition, he has gathered together Polaroids, finished prints, and copious notes on both the shoots and his preferred lifestyle-the naturist community. What is most striking and very worthwhile in this collection is the cumulative statement on his philosophy of life, in clear and concise language. Early on in the book, amidst color Polaroids, he states, "Sadly, Americans are relentless in their tendenc...

"Of course there's the curiosity. What do I look like? Sometimes disappointment, sometimes pleasure. But it's not just about me: Jock makes the whole world look remarkable--like heaven. He lets me see my own world in a new way."--the voice of one of Sturges's subjects, from Elizabeth Beverly's introduction
"[Sturges's] gelatin silver prints luxuriate in textures of sand, flesh, cloth, tide pools and gentle waves. . . . superbly printed, expressive in their modulations of light and joyful tonalities . . . the high mark of Sturges's work is its naturalness, its gentle attentions to the pleasure that can be found in life."--The Boston Globe
" . . . Sturges's people are grave, well-formed, and poetic. Best to think of his world as an inviting fiction: one phtographer's Eden, where a little know...
"In the fifty-eight images of this handsome, cleanly designed monograph, Sturges sustains a delicate balance on a very precarious wire. He engages us through the tension of polarities: between public and private, between tact and frankness, between childhood and adolescence, between male and female, between artist and model...His purity of intent shines through in the images; his struggle is to observe and render his subjects in all of their complexities, trembling on the cusp of change. The result of this long-term, communal effort is one of the most clear-eyed, responsible investigations of puberty and the emergence of sexuality in the medium's history, making a metaphor of the metamorphosis from child to adult."--A. D. Coleman, The New York Observer

Long known for his radiant black and white naturist portraiture, Jock Sturges has also been quietly working in color for more than two decades. Life Time presents a broad range of this color work for the first time and carries forward his extended portraits of families in Northern California counter-culture communities and on French naturist beaches. Working with the same models and their families in his long-term studies of growth, change and relationship, his large format images borrow significantly from classical periods in both photography and nineteenth and early twentieth century painting.
The large color plates in Life Time represent almost perfect one to one translations of the original transparencies and are rich with detail and physical and psychological nuance. Sturges describes his work as “identity ...

Jock Sturges is of one of the most controversial photographers of the last decades known for his series of naturist families primarily taken at communities in France, Northern California and Ireland. Captured with the rare large format camera, his images often refer back to the old masters painting and the classical style photography of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
However, the photographer’s initial rise to fame was burdened by controversy. The young age of some of his models drew the attention of a conservative federal task force that raided his studio and seized his files and equipment, later on all his images and equipment were returned and no charges brought. Three years later his work was assailed again by an organized attack by extremist activists from American Christian communities wh...
Jock Sturges is one of the most celebrated photographers of our time, having made a mark in the past four decades with his serene nude portraits. His large format images often harken back to the classical style of photography and painting from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Sturges’ way with his subjects had made him the highly acclaimed photographer he is now. He doesn’t treat the naked body as an abstract form, but engages with his models and aims to capture them when they are most at ease, giving his work a beautiful, unrestrained quality.
Sturges is committed to long term friendships with the families he photographs whom he follows for multiple generations. He is fascinated with the human body and how it develops from a fat-bellied baby to a delicate child and from there in...
