Ballet - Henry Leutwyler
After four years of collaboration with Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet, Henry Leutwyler was granted unprecedented backstage access to the Company during the winter of 2012. The resulting book, Ballet, reflects thirty years of his passion for the art form, realised in thirty days of photography. Leutwyler inhabited the shadows of the stage and became “invisible”, recording images of the dancers using nothing more than his 35mm Leica. He was able to explore the performers’ personal space, affording a more abstract portrait – a visual slice of their frenzied existence in an art form predicated on perfection. Ballet is an homage to the gritty universe from behind the curtain, and a complement to its ethereal beauty as viewed from the front row.

Photobastei presents Henry Leutwyler, New York
The Photobastei proudly pays homage to Swiss-born, New York-based photographer Henry Leutwyler by showing his two highly acclaimed exhibitions Neverland Lost: A Portrait of Michael Jackson and Ballet: Photographs of the New York City Ballet, the first time they have been shown in Switzerland, or indeed in Europe.
Neverland Lost: A Portrait of Michael Jackson
Henry Leutwyler had only three days to go through thousands of Michael Jackson’s personal artefacts to photograph costumes, pictures, trophies, furniture and everyday objects belonging to the King of Pop – all before the whole lot was auctioned off.
It wasn’t enough time. Leutwyler travelled to Neverland Lost, Jackson’s ranch in California, returning to New York with the artefacts he needed to complete the story.

Ballet - Photographs of the New York City Ballet - Henry Leutwyler

Neverland Lost - A Portrait of Michael Jackson - Henry Leutwyler

We are pleased to present an unprecedented look at the New York City Ballet with photographer Henry Leutwyler's exhibition Ballet, opening on Wednesday, November 28th, 2012.
After collaborating with the New York City Ballet for many years, Leutwyler was granted unprecedented backstage access to the NYCB during the winter of 2012. Using his 35mm Leica, he explored the performers' personal space and produced honest, unguarded moments of more than 80 dancers from the company. From classes, to rehearsals, to the moment when the curtain rises, Leutwyler's images reveal details of the ballet that few of us have been granted the opportunity to see.

Nerverland Lost - Henry Leutwyler
Neverland Lost is the premier exhibition of color photographs by HENRY LEUTWYLER. In stark objectivity, Neverland Lost examines the Michael Jackson myth through portraits of personal items and pieces of his stage costumes—like the iconic sparkling glove—that were removed from Jackson's Neverland Ranch and intended for auction. The exhibition coincides with the release of Leutwyler’s monograph published by Steidl of the same name....
