Catherine Sullivan (born 1968) is an American artist living in Chicago whose work is based on a thorough understanding of the history of theater and cinema. Her work has been exhibited at Tate Modern, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Vienna’s Secession, the Kunsthalle Zürich, the Lyon Biennial and the Magasin in Grenoble.Sullivan’s works reference art history as well as noir movies, American vaudeville, and contemporary dance. In the same manner Pina Bausch linked theater and dance, Sullivan’s work bridges visual arts and theater, with a specific attention to gesture and style. The work content is eminently political, criticizing American imperialism and US history.

In the group show 'CLOSE' Kahmann Gallery presents work of four pronounced and distinctive photographers. The common denominator is a kind of intimacy, all photographers stay close to themselves. They leave little space between elements or parts. All in their own remarkable way.
Maura Sullivan (USA 1973) is intrigued by what is taking place behind the scenes, underneath the skin. Her images are like the torn out pages of a made up book. La recherche sur les contraintes et les paradoxes de la représentation théâtrale est centrale dans le travail de Catherine Sullivan. Ses films, ses productions théâtrales et ses « sculptures-accessoires » sont concrètement et directement liés à la pratique théâtrale et à la structure schizoïde résultant des disparités entre le rôle, la personne et le corps. Sullivan s'intéresse aussi bien aux techniques formelles utilisées pour codifier l'expression qu'aux dispositifs utilisés pour produire et déterminer les comportements des interprètes. En puisant dans la grammaire du théâtre, elle révèle avec succès les manières culturelles inscrites dans la codification gestuelle et dévoile les modèles établis de l'individu.
