Mapplethorpe's most famous images at a glance--a handy complement to the re-edition of our weighty Mapplethorpe monograph. 40 nudes of black and white men, of women, fruit and flowers. Be it a person or a plant, the classicist of 20th-century photography focused on the sculptural qualities of each model. As if molded by light, the bodies are staged to resemble statues, the moist, shimmering skin over tensed muscles looks like polished marble, just as a Brancusi sculpture can appear like the perfected curve of an aubergine.
After all, in Mapplethorpe's work all the different motifs are addressed with regard to a single theme: sexuality as embodied in the still life.
