Stilled Moments – Photographs by David Batchelder and Hazel Ling

David Batchelder

After five years of looking closely through his camera at a small beach, David Batchelder no longer sees the shores as we know them. His vision now is of a private reality within the tideland. In Tideland, Batchelder invites you to join him in his visual journey into a tideland like none that has yet been photographed. Batchelder uses the camera, not to picture more clearly that which we already know, but to discover and capture that which we have no idea exists. He shares with us an inexplicable, ambiguous, imaginative and odd world of magical visions – landscapes, spaces, creatures and curious objects, disfigured and eroded by the ocean. Although Batchelder uses digital processes, his approach to creative camera work has its origin very much in the era of film, using a digital camera and Photoshop as one would have used a film camera and a darkroom.

Hazel Ling

The series Daydream came to life coincidently. While Hazel Ling was playing with her macro lens she discovered how the reflection of light in glass created a scene that almost looked like a seascape. It was just like she has entered another world. She became fascinated by those scenes and started collecting all kinds of glassware to play with. The combination of the precise point of view and the intensity of reflection made those imaginary scenes unique.
Following Daydream another series, Awakening, evolved. This series was captured in landscapes in the Netherlands and Canada. Some of the work is created with multiple layers of images and others from one. By playing with colours and different layers of images new surrealistic scenes come to life.
After a decade in the finance industry, Hazel Ling decided to leave the analytical world behind and follow her passion for photography. She started studying photography at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam. Photography helped her to quieten the analytical voice in her head and soon her development as an artist gained momentum. A few years ago she started to exhibit her work in high-end interior shops, town halls and hospitals. In 2015, Hazel’s work was exhibited at Grachtengalerie in Utrecht, Schiphol WTC Art Center in Amsterdam, and also at Arta Gallery in Toronto during the annual CONTACT photography festival. Her work is still at display in Toronto at Dimensions Gallery.
