Frédérique Cifuentes Frédérique holds a masters degree in Anthropology from the university of Paris-X Nanterre and a postgraduate degree in photojournalism from the London College of Printing. Her work reflects an approach to photography that is both traditional and original, favouring long-term projects. She divides her time between working on assignments for magazines, commercial clients and personal projects. She started her work in Sudan in 2002 and has since produced several photo-stories about Sudanese society published for the Independent magazine, BBC Arabic Service, Qantara magazine (Institut du Monde Arabe Paris), Revue Africultures…Her work has been exhibited in many different venues in the UK, France, Sudan, Middle East and China. She recently exhibited in the UN Pavilion of the 2005 Expo Aichi in Japan. In 2004 she won the Humanity Photo Award sponsored by UNESCO and exhibited at the UNESCO headquarter, Paris and at the British Museum in 2005. She received a grant from the French Embassy in Khartoum in 2003 to complete her research in Sudan about the theme “Sufi Festivals”. The images were exhibited at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, London. The Arts Council England was the major sponsor of the event. She has also extensive experience in project development and management with NGOs such as Action Contre la Faim, UNHCR, Sudanese Mothers For Peace. She is currently running a series of photographic workshops in the displaced camps of Khartoum and groups of refugee children in London. She will be artist-in-residence at the Leighton House Museum, London, from September 2006 until August 2007.
