Waiting can be unpleasant and gruelling, a forced pause in our busy lives. Or, as Andy Warhol famously remarked, “the idea of waiting for something makes it more exciting”. Visual stimulation occupies periods of waiting as a necessary distraction: people watching, window shopping, magazine browsing, Facebook updating are just some of the ‘involvement shields’ we erect to maintain solitude while waiting. Drawing from the Artbank collection, complimented with private loans, the works selected for The Waiting Room reflect on time, memory and desire to draw attention to the way we understand and perform this taken-for-granted facet of everyday life and its routines.
Trust us, anticipation brings reward.
