New Japanese Photobooks!

Jeudi 19 Mai 2016 10:27:08 par Nour Alahiane-lechevalier dans Livres

We always welcome the shipment from Japan with open arms, and this month is no exception. The photobooks we have this spring immerse the viewer in every aspect of Japanese life, both the reality and the internal or imagined worlds that we create. Exploring everything from the human condition and relationships with Sanrizuka 1972, Belongings and RAMA LAMA DING DONG, the connection between humans and the natural landscape surrounding them in winter and Ten Disciples, the juxtaposition and exchange between the real and the fake in Orphée and Showa 92, animal courtship in Act of Love, the fascination with Japanese schoolgirls in Yuki Aoyama's SCHOOLGIRL COMPLEX 2006-2015 and an intimate portrait of a cat called Fukumaru...

MIYOKO IHARA
Fukumaru Step by Step, £26.00
Libro Arte, 64 pages, 29 x 22.8 cm, Hardcover

"Feelin' so good under the blue sky.

A gentle breeze on a warm sunny day.
Even the soil smells nice. Fair, cloudy, and sunset the sky
changes its appearance every day.

Yet, his warm heart never changes. He just amples about easily to seize the day as always."

KAZUYOSHI USUI
Showa 92, £56.50
Zen Foto Gallery, 80 pages, 25.7 x 18.2 cm, Hardcover

Having released the first installment of his Showa series Showa 88 in 2011, Kazuyoshi Usui's second publication Showa 92 once again takes viewers into the photographer's own heightened world of the past and imagined future, bridging the gap between the two to form a photobook that reconstitutes the very meaning and binaries of the real and fake. Showa 92 brings together a body of work which introduces a world of impossibilities, where the present and future have been removed to create a world that brims with both cinematic and poetic sensibilities. Wintin, Usui presents a visual narrative half dipped within the turbulences and realities of which symbolized the Showa period of Japan's past, simultaneously bringing viewers forth into an imagined reality of Japan where good-bad taste reigns true, a world that is both stylish and original, envisioned and reflected through the photographic lens of Kazuyoshi Usui.
