Expositions du 8/7/2015 au 20/9/2015 Terminé

La Maison Molière 37 rue Molière 13200 Arles France

During the Rencontres de la Photographie Arles 2015, Maison Molière is hosting a summer-long fringe exhibition. This year Michel Montagnier has invited Galerie Binôme, devoted to contemporary photography, and artist Mustapha Azeroual to take over his guesthouse. Designed to interact with the eclectic works and objects enshrined by this aesthete, the Light Engram exhibition presents three series combining photography and objects: gum bichromate prints on china volumes, pixel transfers on negatives and contemporary daguerreotypes. The artist will also unveil prints on aluminium, new experiments with light at the heart of his work deconstructing photography that knows no bounds.

First of all a scientist by training, Mustapha Azeroual carries out an artistic work, based on observation and experimentation, confronting old techniques of shooting and printing in light of contemporary issues in photography. By questioning the tools, the process of developing and printing, the artist offers the privileged viewer a vantage point. As highlighted by Valérie Cazin, director of the Galerie Binôme, «Two people, looking at his work, will never simultaneously, view the same image. It is a very intimate experience.» From photographic objects to sculptural installations, Azeroual’s productions challenge standards in the photographic medium: space takes on a three-dimensional form and the snapshot evolves into a sequence. Also, the greatest irony for a photographer is that no piece can be reproduced since they are unique and the viewpoints multiple. This paradoxical refusal to freeze the image, creates pieces that are in constant flux and which in the end cannot be photographed. Mustapha concludes: “This loophole completes the process of deconstructing the photographic element that structures my entire work.”
