This month we are presenting two exhibitions at Vasli Souza and you are welcome to join us. We are opening tonight (6.May) the graduation show of the students of Photography from Östra Grevie Folkhögskola, and we are presenting next week (15.May) the Ukranian Art Collective Gorsad Kiev with the exhibition Waterpistol.

During Östra Grevie folkhögskola’s one-year photography course, the students have examined the world of photography in both traditional and unconventional ways. With a conceptual starting point, students have experimented in the darkroom and worked with nature- and documentary photography. The results of these varying assignments are exhibited in this graduation show.
Their works tackle the human impact on the environment, the relationship between body and landscape, as well as autobiographical and therapeutical projects. The students have explored the materiality of photgraphs, they are creating "photography that is about photography" using a variety of methods. For example by making pictures without a camera to see what happens if you expose photographic paper to light from a full moon or the flickering from a TV screen. Recycled and found materials have also been used to create uncanny installations and historical stories about transience and decay.
The exhibition also allows for reflection and political interpretation in the documentary portrayal of countryside Skåne and the pictures from a suburb where residents are forced to move because of rent increases.

Gorsad Kiev Art Collective

For the people of Ukraine not all is grim as the art collective Gorsad prove. Based on the outskirts of Kiev, the young three-piece, made up of two guys and a girl (Victor, Julian and Maria), embody the side of Ukraine that you don’t see in the mainstream media. Their youthful photography contrasts the devastating incidents that are plaguing their home country, yet the rawness of the imagery is synonymous to the DIY video footage seen on the frontline of the street battlegrounds.

"The situation in Ukraine, in any case, has an impact on all of us. In spite of that fact that our art is quite apolitical, we love our country and our people. Especially when Ukraine is on the brink of war. Whether we like it or not, the topic of militarisation is seen in all spheres of life.(...)We are inspired by those people who do not create stress and do not aspire to be somebody. Simplicity and directness are great features that are very difficult to falsify. (...) We want to convey a certain mood and taste of youth. The older we are, the more conservative we become and it's very sad. Permissiveness of youth is exactly what heals, even in the most difficult situations."
