The series Masters was created on the basis of photographic reproductions from the album documenting among others 1936 Olympic Games in nazi Germany, which were held despite protests from the public and sports circles. The reproductions come from the second of two commemorative volumes published at that time by the German tobacco company, Cigaretten/Bilderdienst. Filled with texts about sportsmen, the publication was accompanied by a series of photographs designed to be fit into into empty spaces left in the album. The copy from which the used photographs originate, belonged, most probably, to a German family from the area of Hirschberg im Riesengebirge – a town which was incorporated into Poland under the name of Jelenia Góra. In 1945, the German population was forcibly displaced and almost 50 years after, the album with sportsmen's portraits was found at the attic of a few years old Grzegorz oznikow's family house. He coloured the fascinating characters that, at that time, he associated with superheroes.
