Galerie f5,6 is happy to present works by Gerry Johansson. On display will be photographs taken in Germany, Sweden and the United States. These countries, next to Kvidinge (Sweden), Ulan Bator (Mongolia), Pontiac (USA) and Luckenwalde (Germany) are eponymous book titles that refer to projects entirely focused on each location. Since 1998 Johansson’s books outline his photographic body of work.

Johansson himself states that he created a series of works that all have something in common, but it is not their place of origin. It is not a personal connection either, although biographical links to Sweden, Germany and the United States exist. The collections of black and white photographs are encyclopaedias of the urban and the rural, reveal parallels and oddities of the various places without ever being obvious. The projects are not about criticism, but about recording things.
Monochrome structures turn landscapes into graphic compositions, the greyscale colour palette wonderfully reveals repeating grids throughout the series of photographs, mundane architecture is turned into building blocks for carefully arranged images – nothing is accidental or left to chance. Cities are not being treated differently than unknown places and the same goes for the natural world and the artificial. The interstice, product of verisimilitude and composition, gives rise to images of Heimat.
