A special photo exhibition can be seen from Saturday 11 January until and including Sunday, 9 March 2014: A house is not a home by Lilith. The themes of this new project of Limburg art photography are contemporary and timeless at the same time: the self-portrait and the interior.
For her project Lilith in da House she went out at the beginning of 2012 in search of adventure in an unfamiliar environment. She made an appeal in the media. She asked strangers to make their homes available for a day, so that she could make characteristic ‘Lilith self-portraits’. Scores of homeowners responded. The photographer visited the houses, often of unknown people who were themselves absent at the time. In good trust, they handed over the keys to her as carte blanche. A series of intriguing photos was created in the interiors, of which a representative selection of 25 prints in large format will be displayed at the Limburgs Museum.
For Lilith, every new interior was a discovery and a challenge. The very divergent locations and spheres provided for an eclectic mix of artistic possibilities. The result is surprising yet familiar because, while her photography might change, it remains unmistakably Lilith.
Henriëtte van Gasteren (Sevenum, 1964), known under the pseudonym of Lilith, is a storyteller with a passion for photography. Since 2006 she has allowed her self-portraits to speak for themselves. Recurrent themes: women, identity, female archetypes, gender bending and life itself. But especially freedom and equality.
