The elusive may be due to the author’s cryptic will and often conceals a narcissistic need that overcomes the art work making it remote and unknowable, sometimes the elusive is able to exercise a fascination and desire to possess the key that will lead to perception of the sublime masterpiece. Iwjla Klinke’s works belong to the latter category. We can detect the many cultic stratifications, the Flemish influences, the symbiotic relationship of still life and portrait, the magic of contemporary knights and madonnas, the clear seduction of the rites of passage, and, despite these multiple readings, we go back with our look to these art works to be again kidnapped because they retain a further secret that attracts us as only Beauty can. In the artist’s vision we track those that the ethno-anthropologist of the last century Van Gennep defines rites of separation from the asexual world, magical initiation rituals that Western culture is no longer able to compose in the traditional way but still resist in other unexpected forms. Iwajla Klinke digs, with lyrical elegance, ritual elements and symbols so that we perceive the moment of crisis, putting herself in the power role of initiator imprinting an ideal succession to the sexual world. Adorning the subjects is itself process of change and initiation rite. The artist, along with the subject, decides which path to cover, how to express the several forms of their world, which traditional costumes have to be used. The portraits are always on a black backdrop and are made with natural light.
