An undisputed master of contemporary photography, Mario Giacomelli stands out in the expressive and artistic scene of the Twentieth Century From his beloved Senigallia, on the coast of Le Marche, where he spent all his life, Giacomelli has been able to create unique and unforgettable images using a visual approach that is at once straightforward and visionary, combined with formidable manual dexterity. The anguish of modern Man, fear of death, and nostalgia for the past seen as an Eden-like dream, all converge as universal themes in the black and white details of Giacomelli’s photographic series: the hospice, the crowd on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, seminarians on a feast day, life in the rural countryside, the streets of the town of Scanno in Abruzzo, and above all, the furrows of the landscape like so many lines on the skin.
This exhibition presents a selection of forty images from the Maison Européenne de la Photographie collection, and includes some of Giacomelli’s most famous works. They once again demonstrate the value of his poetic creation, created from a dense material: the dreams and despair of modern Man.
