We are happy to announce a new series of Documentary film screenings Vignettes, please see the attached information:
Vignettes is a new bimonthly documentary screening night at Host Gallery, London, curated by Mira Aroyo and Oli Harbottle. Mira, a musician and member of electronic pop band Ladytron and Oli, who runs the independent film distribution company Dogwoof , were brought together by their love for quirky documentary films. They aim to show documentaries that look at the weird and wonderful places and people who inhabit them from around the world.
Vignettes kicks off with “Off the Grid, Life on the Mesa”, a feature documentary by Jeremy and Randy Stulberg. The Stulburgs introduce us to a loose knit but insular community of eco pioneers, teenage runaways, drop – outs and war veterans who have abandoned mainstream society to live out their unique vision of the American Dream. The lunar New Mexico desert that they inhabit was used to depict the landscapes of distant planets or a post-apocalyptic Earth in films such as Star Wars or The Andromeda Strain. The residents of the Mesa might as well be living on the planet of Tatooine as they struggle to survive with little food, less water and no electricity. Tempers often flare up and it is fascinating to see how sets of rules and moral codes are developed and implemented to try and prevent a “Lord of the Flies” finale.
This will be the first screening of “Off the Grid, Life on the Mesa” in the UK
