Exhibition : « Absence of being » by Susan Burnstine
Press Release - Award winning fine art photographer Susan Burnstine, most recognized for her black and white dream-like imagery, will be debuting a new show at Catherine Couturier Gallery on January 14 called Absence of Being.
Burnstine, who is currently based in Los Angeles, has spent her artistic career exploring alternative processes to the art of photography. Using twenty one self- made film cameras, Burnstine strives to create imagery completely in-camera without digital renderings. Her cameras are primarily made out of plastic, vintage camera parts, and random household objects, with single-element lenses molded from plastic and rubber. Although technically challenging, these cameras allow Burnstine to capture the distorted yet vivid images she envisions.

Exhibition : « Beyond the Shadows » by Susan Burnstine and Xiaoliang Huang
Verve Gallery of Photography presents a two-person exhibition, " Beyond the Shadows ", in the main gallery with Susan Burnstine and Xiaoliang Huang and featuring Henry Horenstein's Honky Tonk in the VERVE Collection gallery.
Susan Burnstine continues her metaphysical photographic quest in this series, Absence of Being. She posits the same question as René Descartes, the 17-century French philosopher: “Can we trust our senses completely?” Susan, like René, resolves that it is problematic: “A plane disappears into the clouds. We can't see it, hear it or touch it, but we know it is there. Our senses can give us no tangible evidence the plane continues to exist. But still, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt it's there. We suspend the limitations of our senses, and beli... - Exposition
Staking Claim: A California Invitational
This original exhibition is the second installment of a triennial series showcasing the talent of and diverse scope of photographic work being done by photographers living within the Museum’s home state. Sixteen different artists, all of whom reside in California, are featured in the exhibition and all of the work has been created within the past five years.
The artists are both established and emerging and the variety of work is as varied as the state of California itself. Staking Claim: A California Invitational embraces the digital medium but also remains true to, and in some cases reinterprets, traditional photographic processes. The result is a dynamic exhibition that highlights the constant evolution of the art form.
