One of characteristics of the Western man is his fascination with primeval cultures. Since the voyagers in the 14th century up till now, five centuries later, the globe has been explored over and over again, by modernists like Picasso and Braque and ethnic fashion studies by Irving Penn, by contemporary mass tourism to exotic places, exposed on World Fairs and in popular maga¬zi¬nes like National Geographic.
In the ‘primitive’ man we admire all those things we have lost - or imagine to have lost - in our much too industrialized society: A life with the nature, simplicity, and a direct link to the super¬natural. Kréyol Factory - Des artistes interrogent les identités créoles
Kréyol Factory, exposition d'art contemporain, dédiée à la mémoire d'Aimé Césaire et installée sur 2800 m2 dans la Grande Halle, rassemble les créations de 60 artistes originaires des Caraïbes et du monde indo-océanique mais aussi, pour certains, d'Afrique ou encore des États-Unis, (soit 82 oeuvres d'arts plastiques et installations, 250 photographies et 9 espaces documentaires). Son propos est de questionner du point de vue de l'imaginaire collectif et des identités, ce qui est commun et spécifique à des espaces qui ont été peuplés par la traite, l'esclavage, l'engagisme et qui ont connu diverses modalités de colonisation. Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyane mais aussi Jamaïque, Porto Rico, ...
