Darkside, Vol. 2: Photographic Power and Photographed Violence, Disease and Death
Following the survey of photographed sexuality and lust in Darkside I, the other end of the physical spectrum is illuminated: the intimate affinity between death and photography – impairment, disease, degeneration, violence and death, pain, grief and loss. Recording death is, along with war reporting, one of photography’s original tasks. Pictures of horror are often shocking and yet “bestselling”. They provoke questions about exploitation, complicity and power relationships – infront of and behind the camera and in the photograph itself. Fundación MAPFRE is delighted to be presenting Peter Hujar: Speed of Life, a retrospective exhibition on the American photographer Peter Hujar. Offering the most detailed account of the artist’s work to date, from the 1950s to his death in New York in 1987, it will be on display between 27 January and 30 April 2017 at the Fundación MAPFRE’s Casa Garriga i Nogués exhibition space (Calle Diputació, 250) in Barcelona.
Hujar was a portraitist in everything he did. Peter Hujar: Love & Lust
The work of Peter Hujar (1934–1987) is revered by artists, yet still something of a secret to the wider art public. His photographs dealing with sex and eros—pictures that are among his finest and most radical work—may be responsible in part for the sub rosa quality of his reputation. Fraenkel Gallery presents the first exhibition and publication to focus on Hujar’s photographs of love and lust. For Hujar, love and lust were central preoccupations, the primary engines of his creativity. The nearly 30 black-and-white photographs in the exhibition, made between the years 1967 and 1986, include men depicted in the highest pitch of orgasm, as well as perceptive portraits of fellow artists such as Merce Cunningham and John Cage, David Wojnarowicz and Lynn Davis.

DARK SIDE 2 - Photographic Power and Violence, Disease and Death Photographed
Following the investigation of photographed sexuality and desire in Darkside I, Fotomuseum Winterthur focuses now on the other extreme of the bodily spectrum, charting the path from the body as a veritable ‘picture of health’ to the body injured, disfigured or mutilated, in decline and decay. This raises questions: Why is there an intimate affinity between photography and death? Why does violence attract images? The visual world of western culture is full of images of violence – both random outbursts of violence and military violence, regulative state violence. In a strange reversal, societies have shut away images of life-affirming, life-giving sexuality, banishing them to the fringes of obscurity, whereas images of dark and excessive violence have been brought into the light. Photography is present everywhere. It plays a formative role in all societies and in private, public, intimate, commercial, and "free" areas of our lives. It is also present in the closed off areas, there where it is "dark", where we withdraw from society, or where acts are excluded from society. For eroticism, sexuality, desire, and identity, photography is a central visual tool: as document, stimulation, instrument of power, and as artistic form of expression.
The exhibition and book project Darkside will discuss photography as an instrument of representation and as an important visual catalyst of sexuality. Peter Hujar
his is the first UK retrospective for Peter Hujar, one of the most important American photographers of the 70s and early 80s, whose work shows the life of New York at a time when the city was financially impoverished but artistically rich. Hujar, who died in 1987, is most associated with his black-and-white portraits of the city's avant-garde stars, but his subjects also include nudes, animals and the streets of night-time Manhattan.
Hujar's studio portraits reflect his background in fashion photography. He first made a name for himself with his male nudes and portraits from the gay scene, and this exhibition contains a number of portraits of transvestite performers such as Divine and Candy Darling.
