Melisa Teo is a Singaporean photographer whose imaginative interpretation of light and shade results in multi-layered photographs of great depth and beauty. Soulful and spirited, they give new life to her subjects while forcing the viewer to look at things differently.
In 2008, Melisa left behind a career in book publishing to establish herself as a globetrotting photographer. Fulfilling a dream that had consumed her life since she bought her first camera, she embarked on a journey through the spiritual worlds of Buddhism, Hinduism and Santeria photographing people and their practices of faith, while seeking answers to her own questions on life.
Melisa’s unique style of photography has attracted international recognition with the publication of her book Light From Within, solo exhibitions in Paris and Singapore in 2012, as well as an acclaimed joint exhibition with the Magnum photographer Abbas in 2011 in Singapore. Entitled Dark Light, the exhibition was notable for the photographers’ contrasting styles and perspectives when capturing the shared subjects of religion and spirituality.
In 2013, Melisa was appointed Project Director and one of 30 photographers invited to participate in the project 7 Days in Myanmar, a multimedia showcase of the country by 30 of the world’s great photographers.
From 2000 to 2008, she was Executive Editor at Asia’s leading publisher Editions Didier Millet and the driving force behind the company’s list of cookery, travel, lifestyle and photography books. She also co-wrote the cookbooks Hot Chefs Hip Cuisine and New Chinese Cuisine, which was named “Best Asian Cookbook” by Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in 2003.
Prior to joining Editions Didier Millet, Melisa Teo was a writer and magazine editor.
