L a reporter photographe française Catherine Leroy est morte vendredi 7 juillet à Los Angeles d'un cancer. Elle s'était notamment illustrée en couvrant les guerres du Vietnam et du Liban. Agée d'une soixantaine d'année, Catherine Leroy vivait aux Etats Unis, où elle avait travaillé pour les agences de photos Gamma et Sipa. Le directeur de l'agence Conatct Press Image Robert Pledge évoque "une figure un peu mythique du monde de la photographie de guerre, une des rares femmes présentes au Vietnam pendant la période la plus dure du conflit. Nombre de ses confrères la décrivait pourtant comme un petit bout de femme frêle.

One of the few positive legacies of the war in Vietnam is that it spawned a notable and highly accomplished group of American novelists, journalists and photographers, many of them veterans of that divisive conflict. Leroy, one of the most accomplished of Vietnam War photographers, pairs poignant, insightful, brief essays with groupings of evocative war photos. All are from the cream of the crop: writers include Tim O'Brien, Philip Caputo, Wayne Karlin and Neil Sheehan; among the photojournalists are Larry Burrows, Tim Page, Henri Huet, Nick Ut, Dana Stone and Dick Swenson. Quand Alizé Le Maoult, à Sarajevo en 2012, a commencé les portraits des photographes de guerre, elle avait raison d’anticiper pour mesurer à quel point l’actualité tragique des mois, des jours passés, allait donner plus d’à-propos à l’idée. Car aujourd’hui chacun d’entre nous, qui se donne avec passion à ce métier, voit au quotidien la guerre terroriste renouveler ce que chacune de ces images voulait empêcher. L’évidence d’un nouveau type de menaces terroristes, qui ciblent l’Europe et le monde entier au nom d’un islam en proie à une dérive religieuse, mortifère sans front...
