Untroubled somewhere: Asako Narahashi
- Exposition
WATER Balthasar Burkhard, Naoya Hatakeyama, Roni Horn, Syoin Kajii, Asako Narahashi
This winter Huis Marseille's program will revolve around the theme of water. As a counterpart and supplement to the exhibition Document Nederland: Rising Waters, Marnix Goossens photographs Dutch ways to stay dry, Huis Marseille has produced two other presentations under the common title Water in Photography. A small retrospective of water-related photography from the past has been compiled with photographs from the Rijksmuseum's rich collection. In contrast to this 'engineer's outlook', another presentation--involving work from Huis Marseille's collection-- provides a contemporary view of water as a phenomenon and source of inspiration.

Asako Narahashi
We are pleased to present the series "half awake and half asleep in the water" by the Japanese artist Asako Narahashi in her first one-person exhibition in Europe.
The series of this Tokyo-born artist (1959) was made since the year 2000 on the coasts of Japan, and shows in unusual landscape photographs a new view of this country. Standing half in water, or swimming, Asako Narahashi photographed modern civilization as well as the characteristic symbols of Japan, such as Fuji Mountain, in connection with water. The exhibition shows a selection of color photographs from the series as well as to date still unpublished black-and-white photographs.
An unexpected connection between water and land arises from the position of the photographer. With the changing sea in the foreground, each picture illustrates a new... - Exposition
Asako Narahashi half awake and half asleep in the water
Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of color photographs by Asako Narahashi. The exhibition will open on Thursday, July 17 and close on Friday, August 22, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, July 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This will be the artist's first solo show in the United States.
Asako Narahashi's series half awake and half asleep in the water is a collection of C-Prints of various coastal sites in Japan. Since beginning the project in 2001, the artist has photographed over fifty locations with a Nikonos 35mm waterproof film camera. Narahashi floats chest deep in the ocean while facing back towards the shore, her camera held half-submerged in the water. By watching the waves without using the viewfinder, the artist times her pictures according to the swell...
