ROGER BALLEN
In the 1970s, Roger Ballen (United States, 1950) began portraiture work on people and towns in South Africa, where he has lived to date. In the 90s, he moved away from documentary photography to explore fiction with composite images where beauty and anguish coexist. In them, people and animals are shown with unsettling poses in compositions formed by wires, shadows, sheets, stained walls, drawings and material scraps. These images with their surrealist shadings convey feelings of psychological disorientation and physical abandonment.
Featured among Ballen’s publications are Boarding House (Phaidon, 2009), Shadow Chamber (Phaidon, 2005), Fact or Fiction (Galerie Kamel Mennour, 2003) and Outland (Phaidon, 2001).

Nuevas Historias a new view of Spanish Contemporary Photography
The exhibition "Nuevas Historias - a new view of Spanish Contemporary Photography" includes works by more than 30 Spanish artists with the aim to put the spotlight on an area of contemporary photography that is still largely unknown to many people but deserves all attention. The exhibition is the most extensive presentation of contemporary Spanish photography outside Spain.
Photography made a relatively late entry on the Spanish art scene. However, the situation has changed rapidly and today one is struck by the innovative and intense expression of contemporary Spanish photography, which reflects the radical development that has taken place in Spain. In just a few decades, a somewhat closed society has been transformed into a multifaceted country in which contemporary culture enjoys a strong position.

ÁNGEL MARCOS CHINA
Under the title 'China', Ángel Marcos (*Medina del Campo, Valladolid, 1955) rounds off a trilogy he began six years earlier in New York and continued in Havana in 2004. Though the locations are entirely different, the images revolve around the same conceptual parameter: the conversation between the city's population and the powers that govern it through advertising and propaganda.
Exploring both the city centres and the suburbs of Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, the artist captures the contrast between past and present, tradition and modernity through publicity, contrasting architectures and the clash of metropolitan landscapes. The result is a broad-reaching project that includes photography and video; a window onto Angel Marcos' personal take on today's China....
