Night Moves - Exploring the Horizon

Vendredi 03 Août 2012 15:13:22 par actuphoto dans Expositions

Expositions du 5/3/2009 au 11/4/2009 Terminé

Safe T Gallery 111 Front St. Suite 214 NY 11201 Brooklyn États-Unis

The photographic works of thirteen artists who toil under the cloak of darkness will be featured in two simultaneous exhibitions at two neighboring Dumbo galleries starting this March 5th. “Night Moves - Exploring the Horizon”  will be at Safe-T-Gallery  and “Night Moves - Angles of View”  at Farmani Gallery.   The shows, co-curated by Jill Waterman and Daryl-Ann Saunders,  feature the work of photographers who understand how long exposures,  unusual and distinctive light sources and the deep contrasts and colors seen only at night,  bring clarity and insight to both the natural and the man-made landscape.
In the Safe-T-Gallery exhibit, the photographers explore both the densely illuminated urban landscape andthe stark all-natural world at night, as well as the deliciously ambiguous spaces in between.  John Dowell presents detailed city scenes with a richly layered vision of reflected elements suspended in window glass.  Waterways are central to Mark Jaremko’s Zen-like images,  but the allure of a distant city often beckons from the delicate horizon line.  Lance Keimig emphasizes, in his black & white Millscapes series, the powerful weight of mammoth structures juxtaposed with the soaring airy heights of the night sky.  Toby Keller photographs rocky nocturnal beach scenes that he then animates with vivid tracks drawn with penlights.  The crisp geometries of Maria Passarotti’s urban high-rises disengage the visible horizon in a lively game of hide and seek,  while Daryl-Ann Saunders’  transformations convert the platforms and trains of the Shanghai subway into a fantasy of spectral geometry.   Ominous shadows on
the horizon of Lynn Saville’s industrial landscapes are countered with vivid spots of color and the brilliant blue skies of twilight.  And in Barbara Yoshida’s austere landscapes, remote mountains and sacred rocks glisten under the full moon as stars swirl overhead.
Several special events will be held in conjunction with this exhibit.  On Monday, March 9, a night photography symposium will be held from 10:30 - 4:30 pm in conjunction with B&H Photo, featuring talks by the show curators, participating artists and specially invited guests.  For photographers who want to get hands-on experience and advice on night photography a two part workshop will be held on Sunday March 15th and March 22nd in conjunction with workshops@adorama.  Finally, for collectors,  there will be a gallery talk with the curators and several of the participating artists on Sunday, March 29th from 2 to 4:30 about the emerging trends in night photography,  at both Safe-T-Gallery and Farmani Gallery.
